The Estonian Figure Skating Championships (Estonian: Eesti Meistrivõistlused) are held annually to crown the national champions of Estonia. Skaters compete in men's singles, women's singles, pair skating, and ice dance at the senior, junior, and novice levels, although not every discipline is held every year due to a lack of participants. The event is organized by the Estonian Skating Union, the sport's national governing body. The competition's results are among the criteria used to determine the teams to the World Championships, World Junior Championships, European Championships, and Winter Olympics.
History
[edit]The Estonian Championships were first held in Tallinn in 1917. Johannes Johanson won the men's event, Hilda Laane won the women's event, and Johanson and Laane won the pairs' event. Until World War II, figure skating was overseen by the Estonian Winter Sports Union. During the Soviet occupation and annexation (1940–91), some Estonians competed for the Soviet Championships. In 1991, after Estonia declared its independence from the Soviet Union, the Estonian Skating Union was founded and admitted as a member of the International Skating Union.[1]
Alfred Hirv currently holds the record for the most Estonian championships won in men's singles (at ten), while Vaike Paduri holds the record in women's singles (at fourteen). Eduard Hiiop holds the record in pair skating (at ten, although not all won with the same partner), while Nikolai Salnikov holds the record in ice dance (at eight, and also not all won with the same partner).
