History
[edit]B.R. Ambedkar Bihar University, formerly known as Bihar University, has a complex and evolving history that spans over six decades.
- Establishment and Early Years (1952)
The University of Bihar was established in 1952 through the University of Bihar Act, 1951, which split the Patna University, giving jurisdiction over all colleges situated outside the municipal limits of Patna to the newly formed university.
- Bifurcation and Expansion (1960-1992)
The Bihar State Universities Act of 1960 changed the division of universities in the state, giving jurisdiction over the Patna division to Patna University and dividing the rest of the state jurisdiction between three universities:
1. Bihar University, with headquarters at Muzaffarpur, having jurisdiction over Tirhut division
2. Bhagalpur University, with jurisdiction over Bhagalpur division
3. Ranchi University, with jurisdiction over Chotanagpur division (present-day Jharkhand)
- Subsequent bifurcations took place in:
1961: Bihar University Act created Magadh University, with jurisdiction over Magadh division.
1972: Mithila University was created, with jurisdiction over colleges from Darbhanga and Kosi division
1990: Jai Prakash University was created, with jurisdiction over Saran division
- Renaming and Rebirth (1992)
In 1992, the university was renamed Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University, after B.R. Ambedkar. [2] [3]
Colleges
[edit]Its jurisdiction extends over the six districts of Tirhut division.[4] As of 2022[update], the university has 38 constituent colleges and 40 affiliated colleges.[5][6] The constituent colleges are:
