Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees is a horror comic book limited series written and illustrated by Patrick Horvath. The series was published by IDW Publishing as Horvath's first published series. The series' first issue was serialized in late 2023, and concluded in 2024.[1] A sequel series, titled Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring is set to release its first issue in July 2025.[2]
Plot
[edit]The story follows an anthropomorphic brown bear, Samantha "Sam" Strong. Sam is an experienced serial killer who operates under the rule to never kill in her small home town of Woodbrook, instead opting to commit her crimes in large cities. The start of the series shows Sam's methodical modus operandi and her general tidiness with her killings. Her long-trodden routine is interrupted, however, when a violent and extravagant murder is committed in Woodsbrook, making Sam fear that the investigation could lead to her unrelated murders being uncovered. The plot centers around Sam attempting to catch the imitation killer and clear her name of suspicion. As the story progresses and suspicion around her arises, Sam experiences various hallucinations that torment her. The murderer is eventually found to be Nigel Albright, the son of Sam's close friend, Lola. Nigel frames Sam for the Woodsbrook deaths, as well as out her for her previous kills, causing Sam to flee away from her town. Eventually, a hallucination encourages Sam go back to Woodsbrook and get revenge on Nigel. Sam does so, killing both Nigel and Lola in the process. As a result of Sam's meticulous planning, Nigel is discovered to be the real killer, and Sam resumes her normal life.[3]
Background
[edit]Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees originated from a sketch of a cartoon bear with a bloody ax drawn by Patrick Horvath in 2017. Horvath thought the idea of a "cutesy" art style juxaposed with violent murders would be "funny in a really twisted way". Horvath reportedly remembered the title of the novel from hearing the Teddy Bears' Picnic on television when he was a child. Horvath developed the story in 2017 and, more recently, while working with IDW. Horvath chose to illustrate his artstyle similar to a children's book to make it stand out and to be more upsetting.[4]
