Description
English: Amtrak's eastbound James Whitcomb Riley (the George Washington, if before May 19) at Main Street Station in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1974. A C&O GP7 is at left.

The original author on Flickr did not include a description. However, this is clearly Main Street Station in Charlottesville, which Amtrak used in the 1970s while the Southern Railway used Union Station. The livery and number help identify the right-hand locomotive as Amtrak #400, an EMD E9A.

The only train operated by Amtrak in the mid-1970s at Charlottesville was the James Whitcomb Riley (of which the eastbound section was known as the George Washington until It was common practice for C&O power to haul the Newport News section of the Riley, and that section joined the Washington section in Charlottesville. Identification of the car behind the GP7 is difficult; if it is a passenger car then this photograph depicts such a switching operation.
