Design for the lobby of Severance Hall, on display as part of the "Jazz Age" exhibit at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States. Walker and Weeks was an architecture firm based in Cleveland, Ohio. It was founded by Frank R. Walker (1877-1949) and Harry E. Weeks (1871-1935). Both men earned their degrees at MIT, where they specialized in Beaux-Arts design. They then moved to Cleveland in 1905, where they cut their teeth in the firm of the prominent architect J. Milton Dyer (1870-1957). Walker & Weeks was founded in 1911. Walker was the chief designer and Weeks primarily oversaw the business. Gaining a reputation for the Neoclassical and Italian Renaissance Revival work, the firm did a fair amount of Art Deco and Streamline Moderne design in the 1930s. The firm became best known for building banks, including the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland (1923). However, they also designed a wide variety of commercial, ecclesiastic, public, and residential buildings. Henry Hering created sculpture for their projects. Severance Hall was designed by Walker & Weeks in 1928 as the home of the Cleveland Orchestra. Industrialis and lawyer John Severance (1863-1936) donated $1 million towards its construction. Work on the building began in 1929 and was completed in 1931. The building's exterior transitions from NeoClassical to Art Deco. The interior is a mix of Art Deco and Egyptian Revival, with Greek and Roman themes -- a popular mix for theaters at the time. This presentation drawing was made about 1930.
