Summary
DescriptionDickin Medal for Antis, Dog of War (44467326170).jpg |
Antis - the dog who FLEW on combat missions. In 1940 Antis, then a puppy, was befriended by a Czech pilot who had crashed behind enemy lines. They escaped and Antis became a sort of mascot, flying on combat missions. Later they had to stay ahead of advancing Germans and made their way through France and onwards to Gibraltar and the UK. In England Antis helped find people in bombed buildings and later flew on several combat missions again. After the war, in 1949 Antis was awarded the animal equivalent of Britain's highest honour, the Victoria Cross - the Dickin Medal. Antis died in 1953 and was buried at the animal cemetery at Ilford, north-east London - where my picture was taken. In that cemetery there are several Dickin Medal winning animals. This is just a short version of his remarkable story. There is a book, and there is also a Wikipedia article. Search: Antis (dog) Photo note: I gave it an extra 1/3 of a stop exposure as there was a lot of white in the photo which would likely have caused the auto-exposure to be slightly "off". |
