Isle of Wight Undercliff at St. Lawrence, view from Isle of Wight Coastal Path. The Undercliff is a south-facing tract of land, backed by cliffs and formed by landslip processes in Cretaceous rocks, whose sheltered location provides a unusually mild microclimate. It is the location of the Ventnor Botanical Garden, which is on the site of the now-demolished Royal National Hospital for Diseases of the Chest, a tuberculosis sanatorium that was established there to exploit the same mild climate.
