Notes Charles X Gustav and his adjutant Captain Transfeld faced the Tartars in the battle of Warsaw. Apart from being considered an outstanding commander, tactician and politician, Charles X Gustav quite fast obtained the reputation of the "brigand of Europe" (rozbójnik Europy), as he was called by his adversary, Stefan Czarniecki, "who was capable of beginning horrors of war in any part of the old continent".
