English: The picture is taken from Krantijyoti Savitribai Jyotirao Phule by Dr. M.G. Mali (Majestic Publishing House, 1980) where it is labelled 'Savitribai Phule and Fatima Sheikh with two students from their school'. The note below the photograph notes that the photograph was developed from a negative that was over a hundred years old. The white-clothed woman standing behind Phule (R) and Sheikh (L) is unidentified; according to historian Dr Ganesh Raut, she could be Saguna Kshirsagar.

Mali got the negative from D.S. Zhogde who, in turn, had obtained it from Eknath Palkar. Zhogde too had printed this photograph in Majur, a paper published from Pune, sometime between 1924 and 1930. Mali guesses the photograph to have been originally captured by Lokande, a Christian missionary, who wrote a biography of Phule; one of the photos in the book is almost identical to this photograph.
