English: Climbing out of the valley and looking back at the two stacks of The Pet.
'The Pet' is a cloud local to this area. It only forms in certain conditions, of which a strong NWerly wind (at high levels) is the big factor. The layered cloud doesn't seem to move...and although the wind blows through the layers at some speed, at ground level it can be calm. As it was here (although severe gales had been forecast....they never came). If you're interested there's a paragraph about it here: www.otagocentralrailtrail.co.nz/places/Ngapuna-a19/index.... Maggie, at the shop, said she thought it used to be bigger. And sometimes it's unbroken : natlib.govt.nz/records/23232388?search%5Bpath%5D=items&am... Struggled a bit with this one. And found it tricky to show the scale. Looking at maps I think it's about 80-90km from this vantage point to the snow capped Kakanui range in the far distance. And about 25km directly to Conical Hill (with the tree on top :-) |
