A film, also known as a movie or motion picture, is a work of visual art that simulates experiences and otherwise communicates ideas, stories, perceptions, emotions, or atmosphere through the use of moving images that are generally, since the 1930s, synchronized with sound and (less commonly) other sensory stimulations. The word "cinema" is a shortening of the word "cinematography" and is used to refer to either filmmaking, the film industry, the overall art form, or a movie theater. (Full article...)

Made in Dagenham is a 2010 British comedy-drama film directed by Nigel Cole, written by William Ivory, and starring Sally Hawkins, Bob Hoskins, Miranda Richardson, Geraldine James, Rosamund Pike, Andrea Riseborough, Jaime Winstone, Daniel Mays and Richard Schiff. It dramatises the Ford sewing machinists strike of 1968 that aimed for equal pay for women. Its theme song, with lyrics by Billy Bragg, is performed by Sandie Shaw, a native of the area and former Ford Dagenham clerk.

Witherspoon in 2014

Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon (born March 22, 1976) is an American actress and producer. She is the recipient of various accolades, including an Academy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and two Golden Globe Awards. Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2006 and 2015, and Forbes listed her among the world's 100 most powerful women in 2019 and 2021. In 2021, Forbes named her the world's highest earning actress, and in 2023, she was named one of the richest women in America with an estimated net worth of $440 million.

Witherspoon began her career as a teenager, making her screen debut in The Man in the Moon (1991). After starring in the 1996 films Freeway and Fear, her breakthrough came in 1999 with a supporting role in Cruel Intentions, and for her portrayal of Tracy Flick in the black comedy Election. She gained wider recognition for playing Elle Woods in the comedy Legally Blonde (2001) and its 2003 sequel, and for starring in the romantic comedy Sweet Home Alabama (2002). She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for portraying June Carter Cash in the musical biopic Walk the Line (2005). WALL-E (promoted with an interpunct as WALL•E) is an American animation film released in 2008 and directed by Andrew Stanton. Walt Disney Pictures released it in the United States and Canada on June 27, 2008, grossing $23.1 million on its opening day, and $63 million during its opening weekend in 3,992 theaters, ranking number 1 at the box office. It eventually grossed $223 million domestically and $533 million worldwide. WALL-E received critical acclaim, with an approval rating of 95% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

The film was nominated for several awards, including seven Annie Awards, six Academy Awards, and two Golden Globe Awards. WALL-E did not win any of the Annie Awards, all of them awarded to categories competitor Kung Fu Panda. It won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and was nominated for Best Original Song, Best Original Score, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing and Best Original Screenplay at the 81st Academy Awards. Walt Disney Pictures pushed for an Academy Award for Best Picture nomination, but it was not nominated, sparking controversy over whether the academy deliberately restricted WALL-E to the Best Animated Feature category. Mad Max: Fury Road is a 2015 post-apocalyptic action film directed by George Miller. It was produced by Miller, Doug Mitchell, and P. J. Voeten. The screenplay was written by Miller, Brendan McCarthy, and Nico Lathouris. The film is set in a dystopian desert wasteland where gasoline and water are rare commodities. Tom Hardy stars as the title character Max Rockatansky, who helps rebel soldier Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), rescue five women from the imprisonment of despotic leader Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne). Nicholas Hoult and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley feature in supporting roles. It is the fourth film in the Mad Max franchise.

The film premiered at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on 7 May 2015. Warner Bros. later gave the film a wide release on 15 May at over 3,700 theaters in the United States and Canada. Mad Max: Fury Road grossed a worldwide total of $380.4 million on a production budget of $154.6–185.1 million. Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregator, surveyed 424 reviews and judged 97 percent to be positive. (Full article...)

The Citra Award for Best Director (Indonesian: Piala Citra untuk Sutradara Terbaik) is an award given at the annual Indonesian Film Festival (FFI) to Indonesian film directors in recognition for their achievement in the previous year. The Citra Awards, described by Screen International as "Indonesia's equivalent to the Oscars", are the country's most prestigious film awards and are intended to recognize achievements in films as well as to draw public interest to the film industry.

Yash Raj Films (abbreviated as YRF) is an Indian entertainment company, established by filmmaker Yash Chopra in 1970, that produces and distributes motion pictures. As of 2022, the company has produced over 80 Hindi films and one Tamil film. YRF started a film distribution business in 1997; in addition to distributing their own productions, the company has handled the domestic and/or international distribution of over 50 films from other companies. The most frequent collaborations of the company have been with the actors Rani Mukerji, Rishi Kapoor, Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma, Katrina Kaif, and Saif Ali Khan.

YRF's first release came in 1973 with the Chopra-directed Daag, a drama about bigamy, starring Rajesh Khanna, Raakhee and Sharmila Tagore. The company had four more releases in the 1970s, including the ensemble romantic drama Kabhi Kabhie and the action film Kaala Patthar, both of which starred Amitabh Bachchan and Raakhee. YRF's sole commercial success in the 1980s was the Sridevi-starring romantic musical Chandni. The year 1995 marked the directorial debut of Chopra's elder son Aditya Chopra with the highly successful romantic drama Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Starring Shahrukh Khan and Kajol, the film has the longest theatrical run in Indian cinema history. Marvel's The Avengers (also known as Marvel Avengers Assemble in the UK and Ireland), or simply The Avengers, is a 2012 American superhero film, scripted and directed by Joss Whedon, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. The film stars an ensemble cast consisting of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders, Stellan Skarsgård and Samuel L. Jackson. In The Avengers, Nick Fury (Jackson), director of the peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D., recruits Iron Man (Downey), Captain America (Evans), the Hulk (Ruffalo), and Thor (Hemsworth) to form a team that must stop Thor's adoptive brother Loki (Hiddleston) from subjugating Earth.

The Avengers, produced on a budget of $220 million, was released theatrically in the United States on May 4, 2012, and grossed a worldwide total of over $1.5 billion. The film has garnered numerous awards and nominations with most nominations recognizing the film itself, the performances of the cast (particularly those of Downey, Johansson and Hemsworth) and the film's visual effects. The Avengers was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and a BAFTA Award for Best Special Visual Effects. The film was also nominated for three Critics' Choice Movie Awards, five Empire Awards, six Kids' Choice Awards, six MTV Movie Awards (winning three), thirteen People's Choice Awards (winning three), six Saturn Awards (winning four), eleven Teen Choice Awards (winning two), and six VES Awards (winning two). The GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Film – Limited Release is an annual award that honors films that received a limited release for excellence in the depiction of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) characters and themes. It is one of several categories of the annual GLAAD Media Awards, which are presented by GLAAD—an American non-governmental media monitoring organization—at ceremonies held primarily in New York City and Los Angeles between March and May.

The award was first given as Outstanding Independent Film at the 7th GLAAD Media Awards in 1996 to The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love, where a clear distinction was made between films that received a limited release versus a wide release. It would be retitled to its current name during the following year. Previously, The Wedding Banquet was given a Vito Russo Film Award at the 5th GLAAD Media Awards in 1994, in a separate category from Outstanding Studio Film. GLAAD considers both The Wedding Banquet and The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love as part of this category category. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cinema, during the ceremonies in 2021 and 2022, the category also included films supposed to receive a theatrical release, but ended up airing on television or streaming services instead. Bogart in Brother Orchid, 1940

Humphrey Bogart (1899–1957) was an American actor and producer whose 36-year career began with live stage productions in New York in 1920. He had been born into an affluent family in New York's Upper West Side, the first-born child and only son of illustrator Maud Humphrey and physician Belmont DeForest Bogart. The family eventually came to include his sisters Patricia and Catherine. His parents believed he would excel academically, possibly matriculate at Yale University and become a surgeon. They enrolled him in the private schools of Delancey, Trinity, and Phillips Academy, but Bogart was not inclined as a scholar and never completed his studies at Phillips, joining the United States Navy in 1918.

On the completion of his military service, Bogart began working in theatrical productions. He was initially employed as a manager behind the scenes for the plays Experience and The Ruined Lady, before trying his talents on stage in the 1922 play Drifting. A recurring legend about Bogart is that his dialog in the 1925 play Hell's Bells was "Tennis anyone?", but Bogart denied it, saying his line was, "It's forty-love outside. Anyone care to watch?" His body of stage work included more than a dozen plays, and lasted a little over a decade. He began to pursue a career in film by 1928, first appearing in the short film The Dancing Town, and then in the 1930 short film Broadway's Like That. Bogart appeared in 75 feature films, and initially believed he was on the road to stardom when he secured a 1929 contract with Fox Film. The resulting productions of A Devil with Women, Up the River, A Holy Terror, Body and Soul and Women of All Nations for Fox, as well as Bad Sister for Universal Pictures, were collectively a disappointment to him, and he returned to stage work in New York. Shetty in 2018

Shilpa Shetty is an Indian actress who is primarily known for her work in Hindi films, in addition to a few Telugu, Kannada and Tamil films. Shetty made her acting debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in the 1993 thriller Baazigar. Shetty's performance earned her two Filmfare Awards nominations for Lux New Face of the Year and Best Supporting Actress. She subsequently earned recognition with dual roles in the 1994 action-comedy Main Khiladi Tu Anari. After initial success, Shetty's films fared poorly at the box office for the next five years. Films Shetty starred in including action drama Aag, romantic drama Aao Pyaar Karen, comedy Haathkadi and Chhote Sarkar proved to be financially unsuccessful.

The 2000 romantic drama Dhadkan marked a turning point in her career, earning her several nominations in the Best Actress category at various award ceremonies. Shetty played the lead female in films such as family drama Apne, police drama Garv: Pride and Honour and musical drama Life in a... Metro. Her comic performance as an eccentric fisherwoman in 2002 action-drama release Rishtey earned her a nomination for the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award. Shetty became a global figure after winning the 2007 British reality television series Celebrity Big Brother, after comments made by other contestants about Shetty fell afoul of Ofcom rules and caused an international controversy over racism. Toy Story 3 is a 2010 American animated comedy-drama film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is the third installment in the Toy Story franchise and the sequel to Toy Story 2 (1999). The film was directed by Lee Unkrich from a screenplay he co-wrote with John Lasseter and Andrew Stanton. Toy Story 3 stars the voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Don Rickles, Wallace Shawn, John Ratzenberger, Estelle Harris, Ned Beatty, Michael Keaton, Jodi Benson, and John Morris. In the film, Andy's (Morris) toys are accidentally donated to a daycare center as he prepares to leave for college.

Toy Story 3 debuted at the Taormina Film Fest in Italy on June 12, 2010, and was released in the United States on June 18. Produced on a budget of $200 million, Toy Story 3 grossed $1.067 billion worldwide, finishing its theatrical run as the highest-grossing film of 2010; it ranked as the highest-grossing animated film of all time from August 2010 until March 2014. American actor Oscar Isaac has received several accolades for his work, including one Golden Globe Award, National Board of Review Award and Australian Film Institute Award each. His career began as a teenager with a minor role in the film Illtown (1998), followed by parts on stage in Joseph Adler's 2000 productions of This Is Our Youth and Side Man. Isaac landed his first major role in the biblical drama film The Nativity Story (2006). He played Romeo alongside Lauren Ambrose in the Public Theater's Romeo and Juliet (2007). For much of the rest of the 2000s, Isaac played minor roles in films—the thriller The Life Before Her Eyes (2007), the biopic Che (2008), the spy thriller Body of Lies (2008) and the Spanish historical drama Agora (2009). He won the AACTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his role as José Ramos-Horta in Balibo (2009). In 2010, Isaac played villain King John in Robin Hood. His profile increased with four roles in 2011. These included an asylum orderly in the fantasy Sucker Punch and an ex-convict in the critically acclaimed action drama Drive (2011). He had four film releases in 2012, including For Greater Glory, for which he was nominated for an ALMA Award for Favorite Movie Actor – Supporting Role.

In 2013, Isaac had his breakthrough playing the eponymous role of a struggling folk singer in the musical drama Inside Llewyn Davis, which resulted in several film offers. For the film, he was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. He followed this by playing an ambitious man struggling to keep his business intact in a violent city in the crime drama A Most Violent Year (2014), where he contributed to the creation of his character's background. For his performance in the film, Isaac won a National Board of Review Award for Best Actor. In 2015, he portrayed the reclusive inventor of a gynoid in the science fiction film Ex Machina, and played his first leading role on television—the miniseries Show Me a Hero. His role in the latter garnered him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film. Isaac became a superstar after playing Poe Dameron in the Star Wars sequel trilogy (2015–2019) and Star Wars Resistance (2018–2020).
