[edit]Development
[edit]After the success of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion in 2017, it was reported that director S. S. Rajamouli would join hands with Mahesh Babu for the first time with K. L. Narayana's Durga Arts funding the project.[3] That October, while announcing two projects during an interview with Variety, Rajamouli confirmed that D. V. V. Danayya's DVV Entertainment would fund one project, while Durga Arts would fund the other project.[4] Rajamouli firstly prioritized his project with Danayya, which became RRR (2022).[5][6] In April 2020, Rajamouli confirmed that his project with Narayana would commence production after RRR and will be featuring Mahesh Babu as the leading actor.[7] V. Vijayendra Prasad, Rajamouli's father and the co-writer of the film, in June 2021, confirmed that they were developing an action thriller film that was an African forest adventure.[8] The following October, Mahesh confirmed that production would begin after he completes Guntur Kaaram (2024).[9]
The film is made on a budget of ₹1,000 crore (US$110 million)–₹1,500 crore (US$170 million), becoming the most expensive Indian film,[10][11] with both Rajamouli and Mahesh reportedly taking the revenue sharing model to benefit the film's production; as per the basis, they would recieve an advance, and 40% of the profits would be recieved as their remuneration.[12]
Pre-production
[edit]As per Rajamouli, him and Vijayendra Prasad had completed writing the final script for the film in March 2024 and entered the pre-production process the same month.[13] They had used two years (2022–2024) on developing the story.[14] In October 2024, Rajamouli was seen scouting for shooting locations at Kenya in Africa.[15] A muhurat puja was held on 2 January 2025 at Alluminium Factory in Hyderabad with the film's cast and crew.[16]
In September 2024, P. S. Vinod was announced as cinematographer, in his first collaboration with Rajamouli and replacing K. K. Senthil Kumar, his norm collaborator since Sye (2004).[17] M. M. Keeravani, who has scored the music for all of Rajamouli's films, will score the music.[18] Tammiraju was chosen as the film's editor.[19] Actor Nassar was brought onboard to help the crew, whereas he helped Mahesh to train him dialect.[20]
Casting
[edit]Mahesh was reported to play as an explorer inspired by the characteristics of Hanuman.[21] Priyanka Chopra was confirmed as the female lead, marking her first collaboration with Mahesh and Rajamouli and her return to Indian cinema after The Sky Is Pink (2019).[22] Prithviraj Sukumaran was cast in an important role, marking his third Telugu film after Police Police (2010) and Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire (2023).[23] Rajamouli signed with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) after the success of RRR, and would be reportedly using numerous American actors for this film.[24][10]
Filming
[edit]In September 2024, it was reported that Rajamouli would firstly prioritise sequences which would need VFX when filming, due to the film reportedly featuring multiple VFX-based action sequences.[25] Principal photography was initially reported to commence from 2024,[26] but instead commenced on 2 February 2025 in Hyderabad. Mahesh, along with Priyanka Chopra, were both present during the schedule. To avoid leaks of the project, Rajamouli enforced non-disclosure agreement (NDA) for the cast and crew, while also banning mobile phones at the set.[27] Priyanka resumed filming her portions in early February after attending her brother’s wedding.[28] After completing the schedule in Hyderabad, reports claimed that the makers would shoot the following schedule in Kenya.[29] The portions in the schedule were completed filming by early March.[30]
For the second schedule, Mahesh and Pritiviraj Sukumaran left to Odisha together on 5 March.[23] For the third schedule, the makers constructed a massive set at Talamali hilltop in Koraput, which resembled Kashi.[31] However, a picture of the set was leaked to social media once again.[32] During this schedule, an action sequence was shot. On 9 March, a footage featuring both the actors were leaked on social media platforms.[33] Reportedly, Rajamouli became furious about the leak and requested the production house to hire a new security agency.[34]
Music
[edit]The soundtrack is composed by Rajamouli's norm musician M. M. Keeravani, in his first collaboration with Mahesh.[18]
Release
[edit]The film is reportedly scheduled to be released in 2027.[35] Apart from the original Telugu language, it will also be released with dubbed versions in the Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada languages.[36]
Future
[edit]In December 2025, it was reported that the film would be released in two parts, with part releasing in 2027 and the second part in 2029.[35]
