1 | Brian Wilson | ![]() |
1,811,539 | ![]() |
The main composer for The Beach Boys fit the cliché of a "troubled genius", as along with writing immortal tracks such as "California Girls", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "God Only Knows" and "Good Vibrations" he struggled with mental illness in a way that ultimately led to the cancellation of the album Smile (later released in truncated, re-recorded and unedited versions) and an unlikely partnership with his psychologist Eugene Landy, something even documented in the movie Love & Mercy and the Barenaked Ladies song "Brian Wilson". Wilson retired from touring in 2022 and has now died a few days prior to his 83rd birthday, with former bandmate Al Jardine noting he had been struggling with the long effects of the COVID-19 caught during his last concerts. Wilson is survived by his first wife Marilyn Wilson-Rutherford and their daughters Carnie and Wendy Wilson (themselves successful musicians on the trio Wilson Phillips) and grandchildren, along with five adopted children from his second marriage. |

In a final for the ages lasting 5 hours and 29 minutes (only 24 minutes shorter than the record-holding Grand Slam final), Alcaraz came down from losing 2-0 and saved three consecutive championship points to again triumph in Paris. |

844,761 | ![]() |
Ana de Armas is a ballerina who also works as an assassin and decides to seek revenge on the guy who murdered her father, with the same kill count of the regular John Wick movies and even an appearance by Keanu Reeves himself. Reviewers and audiences liked what was done by the protagonist and director Len Wiseman (who has experience with action girls in the Underworld movies and absurd pyrotechnics in Live Free or Die Hard), though in two weeks the movie's box office only matched its $90 million budget due to the competition from Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning and the family-friendly remakes Lilo & Stitch and #22. |

In 1961, Hawthorne, California brothers Brian (#1), Dennis and Carl Wilson (all deceased now), their cousin Mike Love, and their friend Al Jardine formed a group noted for vocal harmonies and showcasing the "California sound" with songs about surfing, cars and girls. Like The Beatles Brian stopped touring - his live replacement Bruce Johnston became a full-time member - to make more ambitious albums, and an attempt to surpass Rubber Soul led to the acclaimed Pet Sounds , which impressed Paul McCartney enough to influence Revolver and Sgt. Pepper's, and in trying to surpass that with Smile Brian had a breakdown, cancelled the album and ceded control to the others, and this led to tumultuous decades marked by musicians joining and leaving and Love fighting with the others. In any case the band has made lots of music - their 50th anniversary in 2012 had both their 29th and so far last studio album and a compilation of 50 hit songs, including the infamous "Kokomo" - and Love and Johnston continue to play it live under the Beach Boys name. |

20 | Cristiano Ronaldo | ![]() |
604,862 | ![]() |
Portugal's title at #13 still relied on their superstar who just turned 40, who was the tournament's top scorer and his 8 goals included decisive ones in the semifinals and final. While unlike rival Lionel Messi he won't play the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup for Al-Nassr FC, CR7 is certainly expecting to match him in qualifying for a record sixth FIFA World Cup (#24), and his qualifiers roll between September and November. |
21 | June 2025 Los Angeles protests | ![]() |
602,175 | ![]() |
On June 6, protests broke out in parts of Los Angeles against raids conducted by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). While mostly peaceful, some protests turned into riots between protestors against ICE agents and members of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). The next day, US president Donald Trump federalized the California National Guard and deployed 2,000 members to the city, followed by 2,000 more on June 9. The United States Department of Defense also deployed 700 Marines on June 10. A number of injuries were recorded, including several journalists shot by rubber bullets by the LAPD. California governor Gavin Newsom is suing the Trump administration over the federalization and deployment of the California National Guard and deployment of active-duty Marines. Anti-ICE protests also broke out in several other location across the United States. |
22 | How to Train Your Dragon (2025 film) | ![]() |
591,652 | ![]() |
Lilo & Stitch fell out, so why not another cartoon getting a live-action remake? The first such retelling from a DreamWorks Animation movie takes the 2010 feature loosely based on an eponymous book, where a teen Viking who wanted to be a dragon slayer instead befriends one of the fire-breathing beasties, and even keeps the same director, Dean DeBlois, and actor who voiced the chieftain father of the protagonist, Gerard Butler. Unlike Disney's remakes this one doesn't try to change or add things, just translate shot-for-shot the original with real actors and cutting-edge computer graphics, and got positive reviews for faithfulness. The opening weekend alone already covered the $150 million budget, and along with big box office prospects, the movie also has a sequel remaking How to Train Your Dragon 2 already greenlit. |

#21 shows immigration issues in one of the three host countries for next year's biggest football event have been fiery, and a travel ban affecting one of the qualified teams (Iran) and a few other potential ones don't help matters. In any case 10 squads have joined the hosts in the eventual 48, including defending champions Argentina; Brazil, the country with the most wins and only country to have played in every tournament; and newcomers Uzbekistan and Jordan. |
25 | Air India | ![]() |
574,918 | ![]() |
Again Donald Trump was the first article off the list, kept off by India's flag carrier airline which is also the country's second biggest behind IndiGo. #3 is the company's eleventh fatal plane crash, the last happening in 1985 as Air India Flight 182 was blown up by terrorists. |
