  • Jan van Riebeeck arrives in Table Bay aboard the Drommedaris.
  • Jan van Riebeeck goes ashore, selects a site for a fortification, and establishes a VOC refreshment station at the Cape to supply passing ships.[2]
  • Autsumao, chief of the Goringhaikonas, is used as an interpreter for Dutch cattle bartering with the Khoikhoi.
  • Jan van Riebeeck requests slaves from the VOC for farming and fortification, but the VOC refuses to send them for at least five years, so he only receives stowaways or those given by passing ship captains.
  • The first VOC horses are imported from Java.
