The 2024 Washington Spirit season is the team's twelfth season as a professional women's soccer team. The Spirit play in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), the top tier of women's soccer in the United States.
Background
[edit]The Spirit finished the 2023 National Women's Soccer League season in 8th place of 12 teams. The top six teams qualified for the NWSL playoffs, and the Spirit ended one point out of playoff contention. On October 17, 2023, two days following the team's final defeat against North Carolina Courage, the team released head coach Mark Parsons from his duties after one season.[1][2]

Hirings
[edit]On January 9, 2024, the Spirit announced the hiring of FC Barcelona Femení manager Jonatan Giráldez as the club's head coach, to arrive in June following the conclusion of the 2023–24 UEFA Women's Champions League, which Barcelona won. Adrián González, formerly manager of RCD Espanyol Femení, served as interim head coach until Giráldez's arrival and remained with the staff as an assistant coach.[3][4]

- ^ Huster, Tori [@torihuster] (December 31, 2023). "It feels especially kismet to be closing out the year '23 with a closing out of my career. Maybe whatever little bit of serendipity is left for me in 2023 needs to be squeezed out just for this. Or maybe tying meaning to things is what one does as she takes a giant leap of faith. When I was 4, my parents signed me up to play soccer—I'm told I liked kicking things. But I was so terrified to go to practice that I wrapped myself around my dad's leg, refusing to join the other kids, not ready for a leap of faith so young. Obviously, my dad pried me loose. Fast forward thirty years, and again, I find myself holding on to the game, to something I love. Except this time, I know there is nothing to fear on the other side of letting go. Where my words fail me will always be in any expression of gratitude to all the humans I have encountered on this path. Over the last 12 years, there has been plenty of good and bad and the words that materialize never seem worthy enough to describe my appreciation to those who have been there regardless. But nonetheless, thank you, to the fans, to my friends and teammates and to my family. For all the joy that would have been impossible without you. 🙏(Photos: please DM so I can tag & credit!)" – via Instagram.
