Sheikh Al-Moustapha Kouyateh (born December 24, 1978), is a Liberian politician, activist, and businessman. He serves as an Ambassador At-Large in Liberia’s Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs. Sheikh Al-Moustapha ran in Liberia's 2023 presidential election as the candidate of the Liberia First Movement party (LFM).[1] He has also contested senatorial elections in 2014, 2017, and 2020.[2]
Career
[edit]Sheikh Al-Moustapha held various leadership roles in business, diplomacy, and politics. Since October 2011, he has served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Farafina Investment Group, Inc.[3] In the early 2010s, he was appointed as the Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Liberia.[4]
Sheikh Al-Moustapha has been active in Liberian politics, running for a senatorial seat in 2014, 2017, and 2020, advocating for governance reforms and national development.[5] In May 2019, he became the President of Nimba FC, a Liberian football club.[6]
In March 2023, he announced his candidacy for the presidency representing the Liberia First Movement party. Following the election, on March 18, 2024, he was appointed Ambassador-At-Large by the Executive Mansion, where he is responsible for Liberia’s bilateral relations with other countries and represent the nation’s interests on international platforms.[7][8]
Presidential candidacy
[edit]In 2023, Sheikh Al-Moustapha ran for the presidency of Liberia as the candidate of the Liberia First Movement (LFM). His campaign focused on economic development, youth empowerment, and national unity.[9] As Sheikh Al-Moustapha did not advance to the runoff elections, he endorsed Joseph Boakai, the Unity Party candidate hence his part in coalition contributed to Boakai’s electoral victory.[1]
Political views
[edit]In 2022, Sheikh Al-Moustapha criticized ECOWAS for imposing sanctions on Mali and Guinea over election delays. He criticized the move, warning of economic and humanitarian consequences. He urged ECOWAS, led by Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo, to engage diplomatically instead.[10]
