Alborz Corps
Alborz Corps refers to a unit in Iran's military, part of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Ground Forces. This unit is responsible for security in Alborz Province, which includes Karaj, the city located just west of Tehran.
Organizational structure and mandate
[edit]The Alborz Corps is part of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Thar-Allah Headquarters, which is in charge of security for Tehran and the nearby provinces, including Alborz. The headquarters is a central command, overseeing both military operations and local units. The Alborz Corps is one of several units established to perform under the IRGC's executing its policy and give commanders more control, helping them respond quickly to security issues in their areas.[1][2]
The main duties of the Alborz Corps are to fight protests, keep internal security, and prevent terrorism. It works with other IRGC units, like the Sayyid al-Shohada Corps in Tehran Province, to deal with threats and manage any domestic unrest.[3][4]
Strategic significance
[edit]The Alborz Corps has a crucial role executing the IRGC's strategy of maintaining control over Tehran metropolitan area, its periphery and population. As it is located close to the capital, the Alborz Corps is a major player in the IRGC's efforts to monitor and suppress internal dissent, as well as to respond quickly to security threats in the region. This is done by working closely with local authorities, has set up advanced surveillance systems around Tehran. This includes using drones and AI to monitor the area, with the main aim of preventing large protests and keeping control over the government.[5][6]
Recent developments
[edit]In June 2025, during the Iran-Israel War the Alborz Corps was among several IRGC units targeted by Israeli airstrikes. These strikes aimed at military infrastructure across Iran, including ballistic missile and drone storage sites, and were part of a broader Israeli campaign to disrupt Iran's military capabilities.[7][8][9]
