Iona Annabelle Neilson (31 March 1969 – 12 July 2018), known professionally as Annabelle Neilson, was an English socialite, fashion model, author, and television personality. In a career that spanned 28 years, she was known as the longtime muse of Alexander McQueen, as a main cast member on the Bravo reality television series Ladies of London (2014–2015), and as the writer of the Me Me Me book series.

Neilson was the first wife of Nathaniel Philip "Nat" Rothschild,[a] a birth member of the Rothschild banking family of England. While attending formal gatherings during their marriage, she was addressed by the courtesy title The Honourable Mrs. Rothschild.

Early life

[edit]

Iona Annabelle Neilson[2] was born into a wealthy,[3] upper class,[4] aristocratic[5] family[6] at King's College Hospital[7] in Lambeth, South London,[8] England on 31 March 1969,[9][10] as the middle child and younger daughter[11][12] to Maxwell Frederick "Max" Neilson,[13] a London investment and property advisor, and his Italian noble wife,[14][15] Marchesa Elizabetta Maria "Elizabeth" (née Campus [Di] Santinelli),[5][4] an interior designer.[16][17] She had an elder sister, Marchesa[c] Camilla Jane "Millie" Neilson,[18][19][20] an artist,[21] and a younger brother, Rupert David Frederick Neilson.[22][23]

Neilson—until the age of sixteen—divided her time between her family's home, 19 Tedworth Square in Chelsea, London, and her family's country estate, Chilterns House in Chiltern Hills, near Oxfordshire.[24][25]

Neilson had a rough childhood. She once recalled: "My parents took me to 40 psychologists between the ages of four and eight to find out what was wrong with me. I didn't speak to anyone except my sister in a made-up language only she understood."[26] She had been taken to "something like 20 child therapists", specifically, by the age of eight.[27]

Neilson was a dedicated horse rider between the ages of four and sixteen.[5][28] As a child, her favourite author was the children's writer and illustrator Beatrix Potter. Her favourite books were The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies, and The Tale of Mr. Tod. Her favourite character was Peter Rabbit, a mischievous, adventurous young rabbit who wore a blue jacket. She also favoured The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and The Tale of Ginger and Pickles.[26]

Education

[edit]

Neilson attended Lady Eden's School on Victoria Road, Kensington, where she was held back a year. Aged eleven, she joined her sister at Cobham Hall School, a private day and boarding school, housed in Cobham Hall in Gravesend, Kent, where she caught up again.[26] Her school friends included the Japanese-born American jewellery designer Francesca Amfitheatrof.[29][30] She finished her education with no qualifications at the age of sixteen, opting to stay in bed instead of taking her O-levels.[31]

Neilson suffered with chronic dyslexia and experienced extreme bullying during her school years. She was often forced to wear a dunce cap.[27][32]

1985 attack in Australia

[edit]

Neilson was randomly attacked by a man during her gap year in Perth, Western Australia, at the age of sixteen. She was tied to a tree and continuously beaten during the attack, which lasted two hours before she eventually broke free.[33] She received facial reconstructive surgery in the aftermath, having been left disfigured.[34] She quickly fell into a deep depression and became a heroin addict; however, she was sober by the end of her twenties.[35] She later said her addiction saved her "because otherwise I would have killed myself.[36][37] Her attacker was later convicted of killing three women.[38][39]

Ancestry, background and family

[edit]

Neilson's paternal grandparents were Dr Drevor Frederick Acton Neilson, a Harley Street surgeon whose primary focus was ear, nose, and throat disorders,[40][41][42] and his second wife, Elizabeth Pamela Lundborg[d] (née Belas), a socialite, who died in Alcanada, Port d'Alcúdia, Mallorca, before the birth of her granddaughter. During her childhood, she often enjoyed play dates at Warwick Castle,[5][43] with her cousin, Guy David Greville, 9th Earl of Warwick,[31] the current Earl of Warwick, and only son to David Robin Francis Guy Greville, 8th Earl of Warwick and Sarah Anne Chester Greville, Lady Brooke (née Beatty), her aunt.[44][45][46]

Neilson's mother, who was born in Milan, Italy, gained her title through her Italian father, Marchese Gaetano Campus-Santinelli, an Italian nobleman, who died in Sassari, Sardinia, before the birth of his granddaughter.[15][47] This title has been passed down, in generations, through the female relations. Her maternal grandmother, Marguerite Augusta "Daisy" Lilley (née Campus [Di] Semzo),[48] made three cameo appearances on Ladies of London.[4][49][50][51]

Career

[edit]

Neilson launched her professional career as a fashion model[50] during her early twenties.[52] She became a muse[53] for the fashion designer Alexander McQueen at the age of 22, and continued until his death in 2010.[5][54][55] She was also a muse for the fashion designer John Galliano.[56][57][58] She walked[59] in fashion shows for McQueen[60][61] and Galliano[62][63] throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.[64][65]

Neilson made an unsuccessful attempt at becoming an actress in 2000, having set her sights on Hollywood, Los Angeles. She took several screen tests for big films, one of which included the American actor Al Pacino.[26] She starred in a film to advertise the Alexander McQueen men's collection. The role required her to be completely ude throughout and simulate sexual intercourse with a male model.[66]

Neilson appeared twice in the 2000 Vogue[67] portfolio, How Many People Does It Take to Make a Dress?,[68] where she depicted designers and their support groups.[69]

Neilson made her debut as an author[70] with her children's novel On the Pond,[26] which she failed to find a publisher for in 2005. The book was based on her close friends, the Primrose Hill set, as different birds, living in Regent's Park. It was left for readers to figure out which character was based on which of her friends from a series of Easter eggs, however, it had been guessed that "Tommy the Great Tit" was Damien Hirst, "Sally Swan" was Kate Moss, and "Baldy Coot" was Nellee Hooper. She had been in the process of adapting the book into a film.[71]

Neilson was signed to the Sarah Doukas-founded modeling agency Storm Management in 2007.[31][72] Doukas, who later became a close friend, was herself the sister of The Vicar of Dibley's Alice Tinker actress Emma Chambers.[73]

Neilson worked as a businesswoman in 2007, drumming up business for the American businessman Carlos Almada's private members' club, Automat on Berkeley Square. She had her business card inscribed to read: 'Annabelle Neilson, Marketing Development Manager'.[31]

Neilson was the creator and writer of the PBS SoCAL arts and culture documentary series Voces on PBS (2012–2019). The series explored the diversity of the Latino cultural experience and was produced by Latino Public Broadcasting.[74]

Neilson appeared in the short film Because You're Mine in 2013, where she received a special thanks.[citation needed]

Neilson[75] rose to prominence as an original[76][77] main cast member[78] on the Bravo (U.S.) reality television series Ladies of London.[79] The series chronicled the lives of six women who lived in London,[80] as they balanced their social lives, businesses, and families.[81][82] The first season premiered on 2 June 2014,[5][83] with Juliet Angus,[84] Caprice Bourret,[85] Marissa Hermer,[86] Noelle Reno,[87][88][89] and Caroline Stanbury,[90] with Luke Henderson as a recurring cast member.[91] The debut episode attracted 1.17M U.S. viewers.[92] She quickly became a fan favourite.[93][94] She published blogs on BravoTV.com weekly.[95][96][97] The finale episode was broadcast on 21 July 2014.[98][99][100] In March 2015, the network renewed the series for a second season.[101] She returned to the main cast.[102] The second season premiered on 7 September 2015,[103] with Angus, Hermer, Stanbury, Caroline Fleming,[e][104] and Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke,[f][105][106] with Sophie Stanbury as a recurring cast member.[107] She announced her departure from the show in a post to her official Instagram account on 9 November 2015,[108] immediately following the airing of the season two finale.[51] She appeared in eighteen episodes.[109]

Neilson mentored the fashion designer Conchita Pérez for Pérez's fashion show, which took place in East London.[4][110][26] She often modelled at London Fashion Week.[111]

Neilson appeared on the ITV daytime magazine programme This Morning, co-guesting alongside her Ladies of London co-stars: Angus, Hermer, Montagu, Reno, and Stanbury. The group were interviewed by Phillip Schofield and Amanda Holden, with Darren Kennedy, Bryan Adams, and Laura Toogood also appearing on the episode, which was broadcast on 7 October 2014.[112]

Neilson was the "up-and-coming" author of the Me Me Me[113] children's and teenage, and picture book series, illustrated by the graffiti artist[114] John Stephen Morrall,[115][116] known as Astro.[117][50] The first instalment, Angry Me (ISBN 9780992872878),[118] was published by Fat Fox Books Ltd on 18 August 2015. The second and third instalments, Messy Me (ISBN 9781910884010) and Dreamy Me (ISBN 9781910884027), were both published by Fat Fox Books Ltd on 19 January 2016.[119] Angry Me was about her anger surrounding her struggles with dyslexia, Messy Me was about her sister, and Dreamy Me was about the fantasies she had during her recovery following her horse riding accident.[27][50] There were fifteen unpublished works from the series,[71] including Happy Me,[50] ADD Me (about her experience of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), Mellow Yellow,[120] Giggle Me,[121] Bad Me,[122] and Imaginative Me (about Alexander McQueen).[123]

Neilson attended a book signing at Alligator's Mouth, an indie children's bookshop, in Richmond, London, on 5 September 2015.[124] She attended a second book signing at Waterstones, Piccadilly on 11 February 2016.[125]

Neilson appeared on the Bravo (U.S.) pop culture-based late-night talk show Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, co-guesting with Heather Dubrow from The Real Housewives of Orange County. During the episode, which was broadcast on 28[126] September 2015,[127][128] the trio participated in a gamelet created by Andy Cohen, titled 'Saved by the Anna-Bell'.[129]

Neilson wrote her biography-autobiography, McQueen and I (ISBN 9780753555125), which was published by Virgin Books on 4 February 2016. The book focused on her life with Alexander McQueen.[130][131]

Neilson attended the 69th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs), which were held at the Royal Opera House on 14 February 2016. The ceremony was hosted by Stephen Fry.[132]

Neilson made her final on-screen appearance in a cameo role during the biographical documentary film McQueen. The documentary focused on the life and career of Alexander McQueen, and was released during the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival, on 22 April.[133]

Charity work

[edit]

Neilson modelled in Naomi Campbell's Fashion for Relief fundraiser, in aid of White Ribbon AllianceHaiti, at Somerset House in Strand, London, on 18 February 2010.[134][135][136][111]

Neilson was involved with the South Africa-based Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, through which she met the former President of South Africa himself. She had been introduced to the charity by Campbell.[137]

Neilson participated in Glorious Goodwood's all-women's horse race at Ladies' Day on 13 August 2013,[138] in aid of Water, which sponsored a school in Ethiopia. In preparation for the event, she trained at Newmarket Racecourse.[5][139] Alexander McQueen designed a shirt with a skull on both sides for her to wear during the race.[98]

Neilson walked in Campbell's Fashion for Relief fundraiser, in aid of Disasters Emergency CommitteeEbola, at Somerset House in Strand on 19 February 2015.[140][141][142][111][143]

Neilson wrote a section of the children's book The Curious Tale of Fi-Rex! (ISBN 978-1910884003), in aid of Children in Need 2015, which was published by Fat Fox Books Ltd on 1 October.[71] The book was written, in chapters, by twenty public figures; Jamie Oliver and Jools Oliver, Amanda Holden, Ronan Keating, Bear Grylls, Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster, Coleen Rooney and Wayne Rooney, Denise van Outen, Andy Murray, Keith Lemon, Tom Daley, Paul McCartney, One Direction, Take That, Kate Moss, Nick Grimshaw, and Kylie Minogue.[144] The book focused on a half-girl, half-dragon called Fi-rex, who meets characters and creatures of every type on her quest to find the right way home.[145]

Personal life

[edit]

Neilson kept her personal life mostly private and did not "actively persue being in the press".[146] She once said: "I'd prefer to be infamous rather than famous".[147][148][149] During the premiere episode of Ladies of London, she said she was "more of the rock 'n' roll side than the posh side".[5]

Neilson and her then-boyfriend, Nathaniel Philip Victor James "Nat" Rothschild,[a][150][151][152] a British-born Canadian[153] financier,[154] who was a birth member of the Rothschild banking family of England,[155]—the youngest child and only son to Jacob Rothschild, 4th Baron Rothschild,[156] an investment banker, and his wife, Serena Rothschild, Baroness Rothschild (née Dunn),[157] a Thoroughbred racehorse owner—eloped to Las Vegas, Nevada, on 13 November 1995, following a four-year relationship.[158][159][160] The couple first met on a beach in Bali, Indonesia.[161][162] While attending formal gatherings during their marriage, she was addressed by the courtesy title The Honourable Mrs. Rothschild. They separated, at her request, in 1997, and their divorce was finalised in 1998, after less than three years of marriage.[b][66][163] She received a substantial out-of-court settlement after signing a confidentiality agreement[164] and agreeing to revert to her maiden name.[165] She later told the Daily Mail: "Nat and I had been together for four years and I was 26 when I married him. He first asked me to marry him half an hour after we met and then every day afterwards. Finally, we decided to do it."[36] In 2007, she told Tatler: "You don't fall in love with a title. You fall in love with a person. And that's all I'm saying. I've never talked about Nat and he's never talked about me. We made an agreement and we've stuck to it. I don't intend to break that promise now."[31] In 2008, her mother broke ranks to describe her daughter's ex-husband as "a very naughty boy", while remembering the "crazy" life her daughter was sucked into. In 2014, her ex-husband said: "I find it bizarre that I'm still linked with someone I was involved with literally 20 years ago.[166]

Neilson dated Lord Edward Albert Charles 'Speggy' Spencer-Churchill—the youngest son to John Spencer-Churchill, 11th Duke of Marlborough[167] and his wife, Rosita Spencer-Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough—following her divorce from Rothschild. The two remained close friends following their split.[168][169] She attended Speggy's wedding to the German photographer Kimberly "Kimi" Hammerstroem at Blenheim Palace on 7 July 2018,[170][171][172] marking her final public appearance.[173][174][175]

Neilson was a member of the Primrose Hill set during the 1990s.[176][177][178] She remained sober after attending Narcotics Anonymous meetings,[179] but continued to smoke cigarettes. She occasionally drank alcohol, but preferred a cup of tea.[4]She became well known as a socialite[180][181][182] and had been described as an "it" girl.[183][184] She regularly attended London Fashion Week.[185]

Neilson lived at 2 Oakley Gardens in Chelsea, London,[186][187] which she purchased for £700,000 in December 2001.[188] Her home was estimated to be worth £3.1M at the time of her death[189] and continued to stay in her family.[190] She owned a house in Australia.[31] She drove an Alfa Romeo Giulietta (2010).[191][36]

Neilson had an extremely close friendship with the fashion designer Alexander McQueen.[192][193] The pair considered each other to be confidants.[194] They were introduced to each other by the magazine editor Isabella Blow.[195][196][197][198] She was born exactly two weeks after him. He called her Tinkerbell,[g][199] she called him Lee.[200] McQueen's fashion house, Alexander McQueen, dedicated their Autumn/Winter 1998 show, Joan, to her.[201] In 2000,[202] she was a bridesmaid at his unofficial Ibiza marriage ceremony to the documentary filmmaker George Forsyth.[203] She had a bedroom in every home he owned.[204] They shared custody of a dog called Juice. She was the last person to see McQueen alive, having left his Green Street, Mayfair[205] home at 3:00AM on 11 February 2010,[206] the day of his suicide.[207][208] She attended his funeral service, which was held at St Paul's Church, Knightsbridge on 25 February 2010, where she read lines from the Edgar Allan Poe poem, Annabel Lee.[209][210][211] In March 2010, she paid visual tribute to McQueen by wearing his distinctive 'manta' dress.[212] She organised and spoke at his memorial service, which was held at St Paul's Cathedral on 20 September 2010.[213][214][215] She acted more reserved after his death.[216][217] She later told the Daily Mail:[5] "He was my brother, my boyfriend, my soulmate. Most of the time people called me Mrs. McQueen. Quite often we were sharing a bed. The truth is I was happier with Lee than with anyone else. He asked me to marry him towards the end and I said no. I wish now that I had said yes."[218] After McQueen's death, she would only wear her Sarah Burton-designed Alexander McQueen clothing in public, preferring to keep her McQueen-designed couture in her personal archive.[146]

Neilson and Kate Moss were best friends.[219][220][221][222] She was romantically involved with Jefferson Hack—the father of Lila Moss—following Moss and Hack's split. She was Lila's godmother. She had also been romantically linked to Will Ricker, and Karta Healy, the heir to Kettle Crisps.[31] Naomi Campbell was a close friend.[223][111][224][225] She often spent all-nighters at Supernova Heights in Belsize Park. Her closest friends included Sadie Frost,[226] Jude Law,[227] Liam Gallagher,[228] Noel Gallagher,[229] Rhys Ifans,[230] Patsy Kensit,[231] Sienna Miller,[232] and Davinia Taylor.[233]

Neilson was a close family friend to the House of Montagu.[4] John Montagu, 11th Earl of Sandwich,[234] and his wife, Caroline Montagu, Countess of Sandwich, looked after her when she was a young girl.[235] She would stay at Mapperton House[236] during the shooting season.[237] She was particularly close with Luke Montagu, Viscount Hinchingbrooke,[h][49] and his brother, The Hon. Orlando William Montagu, having met them during her 20s. She later became friends with Viscount Hinchingbrooke's wife, Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke,[f][103][238] whom she affectionately called Jules.[239][240]

Neilson once said that her closest Bravolebrity was the Dulwich-born Lisa Vanderpump, from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Vanderpump Rules.[241] Her appearance was often compared to that of Cindy Barshop from The Real Housewives of New York City.[242]

Neilson was among the intimate crowd of Leona Lewis' acoustic gig at Annabel's in Mayfair on 11 September 2012. The set-list included songs from Lewis' third studio album Glassheart. The audience also included Lewis' parents, as well as Kelly Brook and Arun Nayar.[citation needed]

Neilson was an avid horse racer until 2013, when she was thrown off the saddle at 45 mph, breaking her pelvis. Four ambulances and a helicopter ambulance attended the scene. She was told by doctors that she could never ride again, however, she regained her ability to walk after twelve weeks.[139][243] She checked herself out of the hospital. During her recovery, she spent some time at Slades Farm in Surrey.[244] She suffered with chronic back pain forever following the accident. She was training with Mr. Fickle at Cisswood Stables in West Sussex.[191]

Neilson enjoyed flying helicopters and swimming with sharks. On separate occasions, she once competed in a rally across the Himalayas during the winter, and once rode a motorbike across Australia.[66] As an adult, her favourite books were Seven Pillars of Wisdom by T. E. Lawrence and anything written by Isaac Asimov.[26]

Death

[edit]

Neilson was found dead at her home in Chelsea, London, on the evening of 12 July 2018. She was 49.[245][246][247][248] The London Metropolitan Police said in a statement: "Police were called by the London Ambulance Service at approximately 22:20 hours on Thursday, 12 July, to a residential address ... after a woman had been found deceased at the location. The death is not being treated as suspicious by police."[249][250][251] Her death was announced to the public four days later, on 16 July.[252][253] Susan Lord, a spokesperson for Westminster Coroner's Court revealed her cause of death to be a "cerebrovascular accident", or a stroke.[254][255][256] Her family said her cause of death was a heart attack.[257][258][259]

On 14 July, two days after her death, a picture of a man in a swimming pool was shared to Neilson's official Instagram account, @annabelleneilson1,[260] with the caption: "Fatties get in first!". The posthumous post led her close friends to believe the rumours of her death had been a hoax. Later that same day, a family member cleared her Instagram feed of negative-seeming photographs and captions.[261][262]

Tributes and reactions

[edit]

Tributes poured in from Neilson's family, friends, and fans[263][264] across the world,[265][266][267][268][269] with Juliet Angus, Marissa Hermer,[270] Caroline Stanbury,[271] Caroline Fleming,[272] Sophie Stanbury, and Adela King, from Ladies of London, leading the tributes on social media.[273][274]

On 17 July, Neilson's sister, Millie, released a statement on behalf of her family:

Very sadly, we have been informed today that my sister Annabelle, died as a result of a heart attack at home last Thursday. It has come as a complete shock, as she had many plans having recently returned from Spain. My parents and I are devastated and shocked by this news. We would ask the media to respect the privacy of our family and Annabelle's close friends during this very difficult time. We will not be making any further statement at this time. We thank you for your consideration.[275][276]

The fashion house, Alexander McQueen, paid tribute with lines from the Edgar Allan Poe poem, Annabel Lee.[277] The Kate Moss Agency paid tribute to Neilson with a broken heart emoji: "💔".[278][279] Ann Ray paid tribute by sharing a personal photograph she had once taken.[280] Patsy Palmer also paid tribute.[281]

Bravo shared in a statement to The Daily Dish: "We at Bravo are saddened to hear about the passing of Annabelle Neilson who was a dearly loved and respected cast member on two seasons of Ladies of London. We send our deepest sympathies to her family and friends during this very difficult time."[282] On 18 July, Andy Cohen opened that night's episode of the Bravo pop culture-based late-night talk show Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen by saying: "I want to get started with some sad news. We found out that Annabelle from Ladies of London passed away. We just found out today. Don't have a lot of details; we just want to send our love to her family. She was unique and spirited and really wonderful to watch and to know. We're torn up about it here."[283]

Neilson died on her former husband's 47th birthday,[284][285] leading to numerous conspiracy theories,[286][287][288] including conspiracy theories relating to the Rothschild banking family of England.[289]

Neilson's death was likened to the deaths of Isabella Blow,[290][291][292] Alexander McQueen,[293][294][295] and Tara Palmer-Tomkinson.[296][297][298] A week after her death, Michael Howells died of a heart condition with complications resulting from Marfan syndrome.[299] Eleven days after her death, Lucy Birley died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.[300][301][302]

Funeral

[edit]

Neilson was buried following her private funeral service at St Paul's Church, Knightsbridge on 27 July 2018.[303][304][305][306] Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell gave a joint eulogy during the service. Meg Mathews, Orlando Bloom, Liv Tyler and Tyler's then-partner, Dave Gardner, were among the mourners.[307][308]

Legacy

[edit]

Neilson's archive of Alexander McQueen couture,[309][310] that she had personally received from the fashion designer himself,[311] were auctioned by Kerry Taylor Auctions in London on 22 September 2020. The auction, titled "The Annabelle Neilson Collection of Alexander McQueen Auction", was estimated to raise between £120,000 and £180,000.[312][313] Kerry Taylor spoke to her sister about the auction, on 8 September.[314] The event was originally scheduled to take place on 30 March, the day before, what would have been, her 51st birthday, however, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was postponed on 17 March, thirteen days prior to the originally scheduled date.[315][316]

Annabel Lee By Edgar Allan Poe It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea, That a maiden there lived whom you may know By the name of Annabel Lee; And this maiden she lived with no other thought Than to love and be loved by me. I was a child and she was a child, In this kingdom by the sea, But we loved with a love that was more than love—I and my Annabel Lee— With a love that the wingèd seraphs of Heaven Coveted her and me. And this was the reason that, long ago, In this kingdom by the sea, A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling My beautiful Annabel Lee; So that her highborn kinsmen came And bore her away from me, To shut her up in a sepulchre In this kingdom by the sea. The angels, not half so happy in Heaven, Went envying her and me—Yes!—that was the reason (as all men know, In this kingdom by the sea) That the wind came out of the cloud by night, Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee. But our love it was stronger by far than the love Of those who were older than we—Of many far wiser than we—And neither the angels in Heaven above Nor the demons down under the sea Can ever dissever my soul from the soul Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side Of my darling—my darling—my life and my bride, In her sepulchre there by the sea—In her tomb by the sounding sea".
