Production
[edit]Writing
[edit]In an interview with novelist Ayano Takeda , creator of the Sound Euphonium series, lead writer Yuniko Ayana said that the choice to make It's MyGO!!!!! a more tonally serious drama came at the request of Bushiroad producer Yuki Nemoto. Given the lighter tone of previous Bang Dream installments, Ayana initially struggled with balancing this direction with the desire to not alienate fans of earlier installments, but was told by series director Koudai Kakimoto to commit fully to the heavier tone. Ayana drew on her past personal experiences with "betrayal and distrust", which provided the impetus for Tomori's emotional conflict within the series narrative. Ayana stated that she felt MyGO was the most realistic work she had written thus far, even including her works outside of the Bang Dream franchise.[7]

As the two talk at RiNG's café, during which Taki begrudgingly serves them, a girl named Rāna Kaname appears for an open mic and begins playing the guitar over their conversation. Anon mentions approaching Tomori about the band, catching Soyo's interest as a former bandmate of hers. Inferring that Tomori attends Haneoka, Soyo agrees to join Anon's band, delighting her. Anon apologizes to Tomori on recruiting her to her band and promises to not ask again, as Anon later learns during a visit to RiNG that Taki was also in Soyo and Tomori's old band Crychic. After noticing Soyo and Taki react dejectedly to their band's past, Anon messages Tomori to meet up and asks about her involvement in Crychic.
3 | "Crychic" | Daichi Ōmori & Hajime Yamanokuchi | Yuniko Ayana | Kōdai Kakimoto | June 29, 2023
In an episode told exclusively from Tomori's first-person point of view,[20] she recalls her childhood and upbringing. Much of her youth and middle school life had been spent alone and she wrote her thoughts and struggles in her notebook. While reaching over a bridge for a flower in the wind, she was tackled by Sakiko, who misinterpreted her action as a suicide attempt. After Tomori treated Sakiko's wounds, the two became friends over music when Sakiko took a liking to Tomori's writing and turned it into a composition. Sakiko then suggested forming a band with her classmates Soyo and Mutsumi Wakaba, with Taki later joining due to her esteemed older sister recommending her to Sakiko, and the group began to bond. Sakiko's optimistic nature motivated Tomori as the lyricist and vocalist, culminating in a successful debut show for Crychic with their song "Haruhikage" (春日影, Spring Sunlight). However, Sakiko abruptly quit the band days later without explanation which led to an argument between the members, and Mutsumi expressed that she never enjoyed being in Crychic. The band split up as a result, and Tomori reverted to her isolated nature upon entering high school and seeing Sakiko distance herself from Tomori.

Soyo attempts to reconcile with Sakiko upon discovering from Anon that she had transferred to Haneoka following Crychic's breakup but fails, as Sakiko warns her not to intervene in her life. Anon brings Soyo and Tomori to RiNG to reconnect with Taki, where they recount the disbandment of Crychic and Tomori claims her singing drove Sakiko away. Soyo reassures her and suggests reforming the band with Anon, promising to stay together and talk out any future issues, to which everyone agrees; hearing that they will stay as a band for life, Anon compromises on staying until their first show while attempting to claim a position as the band's center and lead vocalist. At their first practice, Anon admits to having limited guitar experience before Rāna appears. Elsewhere, Sumimi vocalist and guitarist Uika Misumi gazes at Sakiko's messages longingly after a recording.
5 | "I'm Not Running Away!" Transliteration: "Nigetenai!" (Japanese: 逃げてない!) | Daichi Ōmori | Akiko Waba | Hiroshi Morita | July 13, 2023
Rāna impresses the group by playing "Haruhikage" despite no prior familiarity with the song and expresses interest in joining them, though Anon is distressed about no longer being in the running for the band's center. The group is invited to perform at Poppin'Party and Afterglow's joint show at RiNG, but Tomori hesitates out of fear of their band disbanding because of her trauma over Crychic's breakup. Taki and Anon argue over whether they should play the show until the former criticizes her poor work ethic. Offended, Anon runs away and grows insecure when she runs into her middle school classmates who ask about her studies in England, before Tomori catches up to her. At an aquarium, Anon admits she had studied in England after graduating middle school, but secretly returned to Japan after realizing she was unable to keep up with her peers overseas. Tomori reassures Anon that running away from her fears is natural and another means to find her calling, as Tomori had done before joining Anon's band.
6 | "Why, When It's Too Late" Transliteration: "Nande Imasara" (Japanese: なんで今更) | Kōichirō Koga | Midori Gotō | Kozue Oka | July 20, 2023
Tomori showcases new lyrics to the band, motivating Taki to produce its composition. However, Anon struggles to play it while Rāna does so with ease, prompting Taki to recruit Rāna to the band. Unsatisfied with the lack of progress, Taki relegates Anon to practicing basic chords while Rāna's inconsistent appearances at practices prevent the band from operating cohesively. Meanwhile, Sakiko learns from Mutsumi that Soyo's repeated efforts to reach out are for the purpose of inviting them to her new band in order to reform Crychic, leading her to plan in confronting her on their debut show under Mutsumi's suggestion. Taki's frustrations boil over as a byproduct of overworking herself while trying to mimic Sakiko's band leadership and composition skills, and she begins skipping practice. Anon and Tomori visit and confront Taki at Hanasakigawa about her absence before encountering Rāna, who they learn is a Hanasakigawa junior high school student.

The day of the band's debut show arrives, but they struggle through a sound check and nervously wait their turn to perform. Once on stage, they also struggle through their opening song before Tomori starts to sing with more confidence after seeing Sakiko and Mutsumi in the audience. As part of her emceeing between songs, Tomori confesses her fears about performing in a band again after Crychic's breakup but aspires to continue expressing her feelings through music; Rāna uses the opportunity to segue into a rendition of "Haruhikage", catching Soyo and Sakiko off-guard and the band follows along. Hurt by its performance, Sakiko tearfully flees RiNG, which Soyo notices to her despair. Although the band celebrates their successful debut, Soyo angrily confronts them about playing the song despite intending not to. After fleeing from RiNG, an anguished Sakiko calls Uika during her work and asks her for a favor to "make her forget everything".
8 | "Why" Transliteration: "Dōshite" (Japanese: どうして) | Kōichirō Koga | Hitomi Ogawa | Hiroshi Morita | August 3, 2023
Taki dismisses Soyo's concerns of Sakiko crying and leaving during their performance of "Haruhikage", remarking she is no longer part of the band, which upsets Soyo and leads her to skip practice after the debut show. Tomori worries her actions may be affecting the band's future and tries apologizing to Soyo at Tsukinomori before learning she has not been attending school. Rāna grows disinterested with Tomori's indecisiveness to practice with or without Soyo and leaves the band, bewildering the group as Rāna invited them to practice. Meanwhile, Sakiko reunites and reminisces with Uika on their childhood as she discusses an important topic. Soyo attempts to text Sakiko but fails before she infers she severed ties by blocking her. After coaxing Mutsumi into giving her the address of Sakiko's mansion, Soyo visits her to apologize about performing "Haruhikage" and admits the band was part of her ploy to reunite Crychic and pleads to Sakiko about her rejoining. Sakiko rejects her offer as rash and ignorant of the other Crychic members' personal agency and calls her out on her self-centered thinking and unwillingness to move on, before leaving her behind.
9 | "Disbanding" Transliteration: "Kaisan" (Japanese: 解散) | Motomu Endō | Akiko Waba | Naoya Okugawa | August 10, 2023
In a flashback, Soyo recounts moving to a new penthouse condo with her mother, who was often absent in her youth, following her parents' divorce, and attending Tsukinomori's middle school, where she became a double bass player in the school's brass band. Her performance attracted Sakiko's interest and she was approached about joining what would become Crychic. Distraught about Crychic's breakup and Sakiko's words, Soyo reasons that her actions have been selfless. Anon, Taki, and Tomori try to reach out to Soyo but are repeatedly ignored. After Taki intercepts Soyo at a brass band event, Soyo reveals that she planned to discard Anon and Rāna after reforming Crychic and her promise to Tomori was a lie to keep her and Taki from leaving, infuriating Taki. Taki invites her friend and support musician Umiri Yahata to be the band's interim bassist, though Umiri quickly leaves upon noticing the disconnect between the remaining members. When Taki discloses Soyo's intentions to a bewildered Anon and Tomori, Anon quits the band as she realizes she had been used, devastating Tomori.

With the band fragmented and Taki avoiding her as summer begins, Tomori is unable to talk to a despondent Anon and begins writing down her troubles as poems in her notebook. With the encouragement of Uika, who she met by chance at the Sunshine City planetarium she frequents and who saw her poems, Tomori uses them to conduct solo spoken word performances at RiNG, which become popular as an intrigued Rāna joins in as background music. Rāna urges Taki to follow suit during her work while Tomori convinces Anon to do the same before relaying a hint from Mutsumi of Soyo's wellbeing. Anon follows Soyo to her home from Tsukinomori and implores her to rejoin while empathizing with her starting the band under a selfish motive, leaving Soyo to declare she would only come to Tomori's next performance to break up the band. Instead, upon visiting the show, Tomori sees and drags Soyo from the audience up onto the stage. The reunited band performs Tomori's poem-turned-song where Tomori sings her desire to reach out to her bandmates in spite of their conflicts, moving all its members except Rāna to tears.
11 | "Even So" Transliteration: "Soredemo" (Japanese: それでも) | Kōichirō Koga | Hitomi Ogawa | Hiroshi Morita | August 24, 2023
Following the show, Soyo makes amends with the band. They are suddenly notified of their next show as reserved by Tomori during her performances, so they begin preparing despite not yet having a band name or new song written. The five convene at Soyo's penthouse to brainstorm while Anon sets up the band's social media account. While finalizing the song and costumes the night before the show at Anon's house, Rāna opens up about her aspiration of finding somewhere to belong after the closing of Space, which Tomori interprets as continuing on despite feeling lost and facing hurt; Anon, inspired by her interpretation and using one of her notes, suggests calling themselves "Maigo no Band" (迷子のバンド, "The Lost Band").
12 | "It's my go!!!!!" | Shouko Hayashi | Akiko Waba | Daichi Ōmori | August 31, 2023
Before the band goes on stage, Anon learns their band name has been shortened into "Maigo". Reiterating how the band feels lost, Anon gains an idea and coins their final name by turning the phrase "itsumo maigo" (いつも迷子, "always lost") into "It's My Go". After the show, the band agrees to use the name MyGO!!!!! with five exclamation marks to symbolize each member. When the band notices a bag of cucumbers left in their dressing room, Soyo tracks down Mutsumi to return and reject the gift, despite Mutsumi showing support for Soyo staying with MyGO!!!!!. Mutsumi quietly meets with Umiri, who urges her to take her time to consider a major decision. Sometime later, Sakiko meets with beauty influencer and drummer Nyamu Yūtenji upon being notified of her online popularity and recruits her to her new band by convincing her of Mutsumi and Uika's involvement.
13 | "The Only One I Can Trust Is Myself" Transliteration: "Shinjirareru no ha Waga Mi Hitotsu" (Japanese: 信じられるのは我が身ひとつ) | Hajime Yamanokuchi | Yuniko Ayana | Naoya Okugawa | September 14, 2023
Sakiko visits Mutsumi about recruiting her for her band and Mutsumi immediately agrees due to her concern for Sakiko's mental state. Meanwhile, MyGO!!!!! celebrates the success of their previous shows and believes they can participate in band activities for a lifetime as they try and move forward even with their past trauma. Tomori tries to reconcile with Sakiko, but is rebuked and Sakiko leaves, wishing her happiness. Tomori encounters Uika again with Anon at the planetarium and Tomori thanks her for her advice; Anon points out how Uika knew her despite Tomori not introducing herself. Uika travels to a theater where Sakiko conducts final preparations and leads Uika, Mutsumi, Umiri, and Nyamu to their band's first concert, concealing their identities and debuting as Ave Mujica. After its success, Sakiko splits from the band and returns to a disheveled home with her alcoholic father. |
Manga
[edit]A manga adaptation written and illustrated by Yuama with story by Haibuchi Yotsuji that retells the story from Soyo's perspective, titled BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!! Swaying in the Rain, Looking for the Sunshine (Japanese: BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!! 雨にそよいで晴れを請う, Hepburn: BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!! Ame ni Soyoide Hare wo Kou), was announced on October 21, 2024.[21] It began serialization in Comic Growl on December 27, 2024, in both Japanese and English.[22]
Reception
[edit]The series received a generally positive reception from critics, though opinion was mixed towards the decision to premiere the first three episodes all at once. In the Anime Preview Guide on Anime News Network, reviewer Christopher Farris described the introduction as "impressively melancholic" and methodical, and described Tomori as the "show-stealer" in comparison to Anon. He also praised the animation style, the expressions of Anon and Tomori, and for not being something like Love Live! or other BanG Dream! anime. In contrast, Richard Eisenbeis expressed frustration at the first episode due to confusion about the storyline, despite getting invested in the characters, while saying that anime "may be worth watching." Nicholas Dupree stated that although the first episode piqued his interest, that music had little presence in the opening, and he wasn't in love with the visuals. Rebecca Silverman expressed her distaste for Anon's voice, liked how the series focused on Tomori, but was unsure about the show's visuals. James Beckett said that the premiere suffers from "a serious case of the Dour Sourpusses", but said that the premiere isn't disastrous due to expressive and dynamic 3D animation, even as he found it boring to sit through in comparison to other idol anime.[23] The series would win an award at the 2023 Reddit Anime Awards on the r/anime subreddit for the "Anime of the Year" prize, from the award jury.[24][25]
Prior to the series release, Farris said that the anime has "its own interesting wrinkle" with a debut before they are seen in a "mobile game or other media" and wondered about their charm points, gimmicks, how they fit into the broader BanG Dream! universe, and other questions.[26] The series would be be picked by Farris as the best anime series for summer 2023, praising the writing for characters like Soyo and Anon, saying by watching the series, he was able to have a "reinvigorated interaction with the series overall" that made him "fall in love with It's MyGO!!!!!, as well as BanG Dream! itself, all over again" and said he was "eagerly anticipating" the anime's sequel.[20] Farris would later pick the series as one of his favorite anime of the year, noting that the series led to "a mountain of unhinged fan art," that Yuniko, as a writer, had a vision in the series of "girls being utterly feral about their feelings towards one another" and noted the complexity of characters like Soyo, Anon, and Tomori, in comparison to Revue Starlight, and said the series locked him into "an emotional chokehold" unlike any other series, calling it an "embarrassment of riches." He also argued that the song HekitenBansou, sung by Tomori, was one of the best anime songs of 2023, calling it "a scream from the heart of her and the story itself" and the one song "that left the most impactful ringing" in his ears.[27][28]
In a review of the entire series for ANN, Farris said that It's MyGO!!!!! stood apart from other series in the BanG Dream! project, while differing from K-On! and Bocchi the Rock!, thanks to writer Yuniko Ayana and director Kōdai Kakimoto, with a different tone, while exploring or subverting concepts from the first season of BanG Dream!, and becomes, in his words, "the most wildly ambitious any anime from the BanG Dream! series." He argued that this is possible through following the characters, then learning their motives and natures, especially for characters like Anon, Tomori, Soyo, Saki, Rāna, and others, with all of them as "lost girls", and praised the series visuals, but noted that the series feels incomplete by the end, with an "awkwardly abrupt conclusion" and noted that some scenes can "look too washed-out or too dark."[29]
Steve Jones said something similar in a review for ANN. He described the series as a "dark horse candidate," with a commitment to "gaslight-gatekeep-girl bossing", praised the expressive direction and 3D modeling, with a "prickly narrative" with girls who are disasters at one another's throats "in both the threatening and romantic senses", due to writer Yuniko Ayana knowing a hing or two about Yuri and getting weird with it." He also praised the emotional depth of the series, even if it takes time to get going, creating a complicated emotional landscape, and called the series "a monumental melodrama" and his pick for the best of summer 2023.[20] He also praised the series, picking the moment where Soyo attempts to reunite CRYCHIC and Sakiko refuses to help, with Soyo debasing herself. He said their interaction is "indistinguishable from a fight between two exes." He also described Anon's character as his favorite for the entire year, arguing that she was the "finest accomplishment" of the series, wholly different from another pink-haired character, Bocchi of Bocchi the Rock, who wants to be in the spotlight, even as she sucks the show's characters "into a psychologically constructive musical arrangement," serves as a foil for Sakiko, and "elbow[s] her way into a protagonist."[27][30]
Nick Creamer, wrote on the Crunchyroll blog, that while it may be hard for some fans to find the series, it differs from the dramedy of Love Live, rising to become one of the "most beloved productions" of 2023, and predicted it would become beloved in 2025, noting the serix mix of "tortured personal drama, rich character arcs, and...heart-on-sleeve musical performances." He also argued that the series writer Yuniko Ayana provides the backbone and personality of the series, constructing a "rich web of emotional hangups and personal connections" while paying attention to character acting and visual framing, engaging in melodramatic psychological drama which makes it a standout series within "the music drama ecosystem."[31]
In December 2024, a newborn king penguin from Xpark, an aquarium in Taiwan, was officially named "Tomorin", a nickname of Tomori Takamatsu, after an online name voting event. Xpark has contacted the Japanese side to ensure the event meets expectations and can proceed smoothly.[32]
Sequel
[edit]Following the airing of the anime's thirteenth and final episode, a direct sequel to It's MyGO!!!!!, titled BanG Dream! Ave Mujica, was announced on September 14, 2023.[33][34] The sequel, a psychological thriller, began airing on January 2, 2025, beginning its 13-episode run, with voice actors Kanon Takao, Akane Yonezawa, Yuzuki Watase, Mei Okada, and Rico Sasaki reprising their roles.[35]
