Proposal to separate Croatian IPA from Serbo-Croatian in IPA templates

[edit]

Hello, I'd like to propose a small but meaningful change to how the template handles Croatian (hr) pronunciation. Currently, when using Croatian pronunciation: [...], the output links to Help:IPA/Serbo-Croatian, as hr is internally mapped to "Serbo-Croatian" in Module:IPA/data.

Croatian people deserves a dedicated IPA help page for the following reasons:

Distinct identity: Croatian is a standardized and internationally recognized language with its own phonological rules and official orthography. It's one of 24 EU official languages. Not a Serbo-croatian, but Croatian language.

Reader clarity: The label “Serbo-Croatian” may confuse or frustrate users who are specifically looking for Croatian pronunciation, especially when the article explicitly states it's about Croatian topics (e.g. cities, people, etc.).

Consistency with categorization: Articles using hr are already placed in Category:Pages with Croatian IPA, implying a separate identity at the categorization level.

Thank you and kind regards. Ivanm43 (talk) 10:39, 8 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
