Antone Lawrence "Chubby" Tavares[1] is an American retired singer. He is the third oldest Tavares brother.

Biography

[edit]

Born on June 2, 1944, he was the seventh Tavares child.[1] Antone was born at the family home at 2 Wickeden Street, Fox Point, in Providence, Rhode Island.[2] Weighing 10 pounds and 14 ounces, his grandmother, Olympia Vieira, nicknamed him "Chubby", which has stuck for the rest of his life.[1][3] His influences were Marvin Gaye, the O’Jays, Four Tops, and The Temptations.[3] He attended Roger Williams Junior High.[3]

In 1953, when Chubby was nine, he led a group called "Chubby and the Turnpikes".[4] In 1973, with the lineup of brothers Ralph, Pooch, Chubby, Butch, and Tiny, they changed their name to Tavares.[3] Tavares went on to have one Grammy,[5] and four number one's in the US.[6]

Tavares' first solo album, Jealousy, was released in 2012.[1] He released four solo albums between 2012 and 2018.[3] Chubby retired in 2022. He played his last shows at Zeiterion Performing Arts Center on May 12th and 14th 2022.[3] Tavares cites pulmonary illness as the main reason for his retirement.[3]
