Danny Ramirez (born September 17, 1992) is an American actor. He has also had roles in the film Top Gun: Maverick (2022), and the HBO television series The Last of Us (2025).
Early life
[edit]Danny Ramirez was born in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in Miami, Florida.[2] He is of Colombian and Mexican descent, attended Miami Coral Park Senior High School and initially wanted to be an athlete, trying out American football and soccer. He noted that after encountering injuries, he realized he needed a new career.[3] He studied at New York University Tisch School of the Arts.[4]
Career
[edit]Ramirez made his screen and television debut on Showtime's The Affair (2016) as "Moving Van Kid #1", and NBC's Blindspot (2016) in another minor role.[5] In 2017, he garnered some recognition for his recurring role as Wes on Fox's The Gifted (2017), and had a guest role in Orange Is the New Black (2017).[6] From 2018 to 2019, he had a recurring role on Netflix's On My Block.[7] In 2018, Ramirez graduated Tisch, and made his film debut in Sam Levinson's Assassination Nation which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.[8] He went on to have supporting roles in Tone-Deaf (2019), Lost Transmissions (2019), The Giant (2019), Silo (2019), This Is Not a War Story (2020) and Valley Girl (2020), a remake of the 1983 musical of the same name.[9]
In August 2018, it was announced that Ramirez appear in Top Gun: Maverick alongside Tom Cruise, Glen Powell and Miles Teller, initially set for release in 2019.[10] In November, Ramirez was honoured as the "Rising Star" at the Third Annual NYU Stonestreet Granite Awards, an award previously awarded to Teller and Rachel Brosnahan.[11] Maverick received several delays and setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and was eventually released in May 27, 2022.[12]
In 2021, Ramirez portrayed Joaquin Torres in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).[13] Throughout 2022, Ramirez appeared in multiple films having lead roles in No Exit (2022), and Look Both Ways (2022), with the latter alongside Lili Reinhart. He also had a starring role in Stars at Noon (2022),[14] and Root Letter (2022), based on a Japanese video game.[15] He later had supporting roles in Chestnut (2023),[16] and Winner (2024).[17] He also went on to appear in both anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead (2022),[18] and Black Mirror (2023) in the episode "Mazey Day".[19]
In 2023, it announced that Ramirez would star alongside American actor Joaquin Phoenix in a "sexually explicit" love story between two men in the 1930s, set to be directed by Todd Haynes.[20] A year later, five days before production began, Phoenix dropped out from the film abruptly.[21][22] Ramirez called it a "complicated situation", and expressed his disappointment in the subsequent cancellation of the film.[23] That same month, American actor Lewis Pullman expressed interest in replacing Phoenix.[24]
In February 2025, Ramirez reprised his role as Torres in the MCU film Captain America: Brave New World (2025) which saw the character take up the mantle of Falcon.[25] In March 2025, it was confirmed that Ramirez will reprise the role in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, set for release in November 2026.[26] In April 2025, Ramirez appeared as Manny in the second season of the HBO series The Last of Us after having been cast in March the year previously.[27]
