The 2025 Netherlands wildfires (Dutch: bosbranden) were a series of large-scale wildfires that occurred during the spring and summer of 2025 across multiple provinces in the Netherlands, including significant fires in Asten, Enschede, Drunen, De Koog, Oranjewoud, and Ede.[1][2][3]

Timeline of events

[edit]
  • April 3, 2025: A large wildfire breaks out in the Veluwe heathland between Ede and Otterlo during a military exercise involving smoke grenades by the Dutch Ministry of Defence.[4] Approximately 130 hectares of heathland were destroyed.[5]
  • Ede wildfire: The wildfire near Ede was caused by a smoke grenade used during a military training exercise, igniting the dry heathland.[6] Strong easterly winds and dry conditions made firefighting difficult.[7] Over 500 firefighters, aided by helicopter water drops, worked to contain the fire.[8] Evacuations were ordered, but no casualties were reported.[9] The fire caused significant ecological damage to the Veluwe.[10][11]

Impact

[edit]

The wildfires resulted in significant environmental, economic, and social damage:

  • Over (number) hectares of forest and heathland were destroyed.[15]
  • Several towns were evacuated.[16]
  • Economic losses were estimated at (amount).[17]
  • Wildlife habitats suffered severe disruption.[18]
  • Several injuries were reported among firefighting personnel.[19]

Response and recovery

[edit]

The Dutch government mobilized emergency services, coordinated with European firefighting teams, and launched recovery efforts to rehabilitate affected areas. Investments in wildfire prevention, early warning systems, and public awareness campaigns were announced in response to the 2025 events.[20]
