However... it does provide its own references, perhaps you could cite those for the two pieces of information you're using FS.org to currently back-up. Try to replace that reference with something better and the article should be good. MWFwiki (talk) 02:16, 24 January 2025 (UTC)

The 34th Mississippi Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. Originally designated as the 37th Mississippi Infantry Regiment, it was organized at Holly Springs, Mississippi, in April 1862. The regiment fought primarily with the Army of Tennessee from Chickamauga to the Carolinas Campaign, participating in numerous significant battles of the Western Theater.[2]

History

[edit]

Formation

[edit]

The regiment was organized at Holly Springs, Mississippi, in April 1862, initially designated as the 37th Mississippi Infantry Regiment. On March 3, 1863, by Special Order No. 31, Headquarters Department No. 2, the designation was changed to the 34th Regiment Mississippi Infantry.[3]

The men were primarily drawn from six Mississippi counties: Tate, Smith, Marshall, Tippah, Holmes, and Benton. Colonel Samuel Benton, who had previously served as a captain in the 9th Mississippi Regiment for one year, was elected as the regiment's first commander.[4]

Early Service

[edit]

The regiment's first combat experience came during General Earl Van Dorn's attempts to counter the Union advance from Pittsburg Landing toward Corinth. Their first battle was at Farmington, Tennessee, on May 9, 1862.[4]

Major Campaigns

[edit]

The 34th Mississippi served in Cleburne's Division and participated in numerous significant campaigns and battles throughout the war. At the Battle of Chickamauga, the regiment suffered 15 killed, 91 wounded, and 19 missing out of 307 engaged. During the Chattanooga Campaign, they reported 235 casualties.[2]

In December 1863, due to heavy losses, the regiment was consolidated with the 29th and 30th Mississippi Regiments, forming a unit of 554 men with 339 arms.[2]

During the Atlanta Campaign, the regiment participated in several major engagements. At the Battle of Resaca, they lost 15 men disabled, and at the Battle of Ezra Church, another 18 were disabled.[4]

Final Campaigns and Surrender

[edit]

The regiment took part in John Bell Hood's Franklin-Nashville Campaign in late 1864, fighting at the Battle of Franklin and the Battle of Nashville. Following the Confederate defeat in Tennessee, the unit participated in the Carolinas Campaign.[4]

On April 9, 1865, the regiment was consolidated with the 24th, 27th, 29th, and 30th Mississippi Infantry regiments to form a new unit designated as the 24th Mississippi Infantry. The consolidated unit surrendered with Joseph E. Johnston's army at Bennett Place near Durham, North Carolina, on April 26, 1865.[3]
