The 9th National Assembly of Pakistan was the legislative body of Pakistan that was elected during the 1988 general elections. It served as the lower house of the Parliament of Pakistan from 30 November 1988 to 6 August 1990.

Background

The general elections for the 9th National Assembly were held on 16 November 1988 following the dissolution of the 8th National Assembly. These elections marked the return of democratic rule after an extended period of martial law under General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq. The elections were contested primarily between the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) led by Benazir Bhutto and the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI), a coalition of right-wing parties.

Composition

The 9th National Assembly consisted of 237 members elected from constituencies across Pakistan. The Pakistan Peoples Party emerged as the largest party, securing a majority and forming the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
