History
[edit]1961–1980: Foundation
[edit]Establishment The founding of two companies, MAR Jardaneh (founded by Mohammed Jardaneh) and Arabtech (founded by Ibrahim Abu Ayyash and Talaat Kawalit), is where AJi Group got its start. These businesses helped the MENA region develop by focussing on residential, commercial, and educational projects.
1981–1990: Expansion and Specialization
[edit]The international division of Arabtech and MAR Jardaneh was established as Arab Consult (later AJi Ltd.). The acquisition of the UK-based Healthcare Designers and Project Managers (HDP) signalled the start of AJi's expertise in healthcare infrastructure development, and the company started to concentrate on healthcare projects during this time.
1991–2000: Strategic Alliances and Water Management
[edit]AJi Group partnered with Montgomery Watson MWH Global (later Stantec) to form MWHAJ, a joint equity partnership. MWHAJ focused on the environmental, wastewater, and water sectors. In the 1990s, AJi worked with Montgomery Watson and Lyonnaise des Eaux (later Suez) to establish LEMA, a water distribution management project in Amman, Jordan. The company began to diversify into utility and environmental management during this time.
2001–2010: Regional Growth
[edit]The company has grown significantly in expanding its operations into Yemen, Iraq, Libya, Palestine, and UAE. By 2010, AJi had a portfolio covering 20 countries, and was able to increase the workforce to over 550 employees, and achieved significant revenue growth. That same year, AJi was listed in the ENR Top 225 International Design Firms, gaining international recognition.
2010–2019: Consolidation and Market Leadership
[edit]AJi strengthened its presence in key markets, particularly in Saudi Arabia. Its consistent improvement its ENR rankings positioned it among the Top 25 global consultants in healthcare and education, while expanding expertise in wastewater treatment and infrastructure development.
Present: Leadership Transition
[edit]In 2020, Bisher Jardaneh, son of Mohammed Jardaneh, transitioned from his roles as Corporate Director and Executive Managing Director to Executive Chairman after nearly four decades with AJi. Hamzeh Awwad, who had worked with AJi for 25 years and served as a board member for seven years, was appointed Group CEO.
Under Awwad's direction, AJi implemented tactics that prioritised innovation, sustainability, and digital transformation, bringing its objectives into line with regional programs like Vision 2030. The rebranding of Arabtech Jardaneh Group to AJi Group, which reflected its contemporary vision and strategy, was a noteworthy accomplishment during this period.
For his efforts to further the Group's standards of excellence and innovation, Hamzeh Awwad was named "CEO of the Year 2024". AJi kept moving up the ENR rankings, landing spots in the Top 50 for sewerage, solid waste, and general buildings; the Top 15 for mixed-use projects; and the Top 25 worldwide consultants in healthcare, education, and wastewater treatment.
