Super Grand Slam in Formula One

[edit]

A Super Grand Slam in Formula One is an unofficial term used by fans to describe the ultimate race weekend dominance by a driver. It extends the standard "Grand Slam" (also known as a "Grand Chelem") to include the fastest times in every practice and qualifying session. To achieve a Super Grand Slam, a driver must:

Be the fastest in all three Free Practice sessions (FP1, FP2, FP3)

Be the fastest in all three Qualifying segments (Q1, Q2, Q3)

Secure pole position

Lead every lap of the Grand Prix

Win the race

Set the fastest lap of the race

This feat has only been achieved once in Formula One history.

=== Lewis Hamilton – 2015 Italian Grand Prix === At the 2015 Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Lewis Hamilton completed the only known Super Grand Slam. Driving for Mercedes, Hamilton was fastest in every session throughout the weekend:

FP1 – Fastest (1:24.670)

FP2 – Fastest (1:24.279)

FP3 – Fastest (1:24.544)

Q1 – Fastest (1:24.251)

Q2 – Fastest (1:23.383)

Q3 – Fastest (1:23.397)

Race – Led every lap, won the race, and set the fastest lap (1:26.672)

This unprecedented clean sweep of the entire race weekend remains unique in Formula One. Some fans and journalists have dubbed it a "Hamilton Slam" or "Royal Flush."

Near Misses

[edit]

==== Nico Rosberg – 2014 Brazilian Grand Prix ==== Rosberg was fastest in all three practice sessions and in Q1, Q2, and Q3, securing pole position. He led from start to finish and won the race but missed out on the fastest lap, which was set by teammate Lewis Hamilton.

==== Daniel Ricciardo – 2018 Monaco Grand Prix ==== Ricciardo topped all practice and qualifying sessions, secured pole, led every lap of the race, and won. However, he did not set the fastest lap due to engine issues.

==== Max Verstappen – 2023 Spanish Grand Prix ==== Verstappen was fastest in FP1, FP2, FP3, Q2, and Q3. He won the race, led every lap, and set the fastest lap. The only session he did not top was Q1.

=== Rarity === Only 26 drivers have achieved a standard Grand Slam in F1 history. Including dominance across all practice and qualifying sessions makes a Super Grand Slam exceptionally rare.
