Alex Garfin (born September 9, 2004) is an American actor.[1] He voiced the character Linus in the 2015 animated comedy film The Peanuts Movie, and for his performance he received a 43rd Annie Awards nomination for Outstanding Achievement for Voice Acting in a Feature Production, and won the 2016 Young Entertainer Award - Best Young Ensemble Cast - Voice Over. He played Jordan Kent, a son of Superman and Lois Lane, in the superhero drama television series Superman and Lois from 2021 through 2024; for his performance in that role he was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor in a Television Series in 2022.
Early life
[edit]Garfin was born and raised in Manhattan, in New York City, to Jeffrey Garfin and Karin Carnaroli Garfin.[2][3] His paternal grandparents Alvin Garfin and Dale (née Etzler) met each other during a summer in the Catskills.[4] He has a brother, Max Garfin, who is also an actor.[1][2] As he grew up, from the ages of 13 to 17, he felt as though he had developed into a different person each year, and then his career became a primary focus in his life.[5]
He attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in Manhattan in New York City, where he was an honors student.[6][2]
Career

[edit]At three years old, Garfin appeared in a number of video releases for the children's network Nickelodeon.[1] At age five, with his hair and eyebrows dyed blonde, he played a a young Russian spy-in-training in the 2010 action thriller movie Salt, starring Angelina Jolie.[7][1] In 2011 at six years old he acted in the police procedural crime drama television series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit; he has appeared in two episodes of the show.[7][8][9] At nine years old, in 2013 Garfin made his first appearance in an Actors' Equity production, in the Joel Grey play On Borrowed Time with the Two River Theater Company in Red Bank, New Jersey.[1]
He voiced the character Linus in the 2015 animated comedy film The Peanuts Movie, a big screen adaptation of the comic strip Peanuts.[10][1] For his performance, in 2015 Garfin received a 43rd Annie Awards nomination for Outstanding Achievement for Voice Acting in a Feature Production.[11][9] Garfin won the 2016 Young Entertainer Award - Best Young Ensemble Cast - Voice Over, with the cast of the Peanuts movie.[12]
In 2016 and 2017 he appeared as the voice of Stripes in three episodes of the animated television series Whisker Haven Tales with the Palace Pets.[7]
Garfin played in his Off-Broadway debut in the play Fear at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in 2019, alongside Enrico Colantoni and directed by Tea Alagic, playing the role of the captive boy Jamie.[6][7]
2020–present
[edit]Garfin appeared as Elio in 2020 in the medical drama television series New Amsterdam.[8][1][7]
In November 2022, Garfin performed in his first solo singing gig in Vancouver, Canada.[13][3] He has written over 110 original songs, and plays guitar and piano.[3][2]
Garfin played Jordan Kent, a son of Superman and Lois Lane, in the superhero drama television series Superman and Lois that premiered in February 2021.[14][15][16][9] He discovered the series on a bulletin board at his high school, and his agent booked him an audition which he did when he had just turned 16 years of age.[2][17] He was the youngest actor in the series.[18] He worked with a fight trainer for a year and a half so that he could himself act in a fight scene, rather than have a double do the acting.[19] For the first two seasons he played the role of being a twin son along with Jordan Elsass who played the character Jonathan Kent, but Elsass then left the show due to struggles with his mental health; Elsass was replaced by Michael Bishop, playing Garfin's brother.[20][21] Garfin spent much of his time filming the show in Vancouver, Canada.[3] In 2022, Garfin was nominated for a 50th Anniversary Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor in a Television Series.[22][23] A fourth season of the series was announced in June 2023.[24] The fourth season finale, in which Garfin finally received his own superhero suit, aired in December 2024.[17]
Garfin would have liked to have played actor Timothée Chalamet’s role as singer-songwriter Bob Dylan in the 2024 film A Complete Unknown.[25] He describes it as his dream role, because he views Dylan as a genius who writes songs that make one feel as though they have "watched a movie," which are traits he looks for in character, because he wants to get inside the mind of people who he views as "exceptional."[25]
Explaining why he is so happy being an actor, Garfin said: "I’m living out my dream. I’m doing what I love. I’m getting paid for it."[26]
