AllStarLink is a Radio over IP (RoIP) service built on the Asterisk PBX software for (ham) Amateur Radio.

History

[edit]

AllStar and the AllStarLink network was created by Jim Dixon (WB6NIL) and Steve Rodgers (WA6ZFT).

The software is based upon the app_rpt.c application with supporting applications and channel drivers for dedicated hardware originally based on the Tormenta ISA card[1][2][3][4][5], collectively referred to as the AllStar software. When the AllStar software is configured and loaded into Asterisk, it turns the open source PBX into a powerful and versatile radio repeater system.[6][7][8].

The Tormenta ISA card was originally sold as the Digium T400P and E400P by Mark Spencer's company Linux Support Services of Alabama, the predecessor of Digium.[9].

"Hmm.. Sounds like somebody has designed a truly crappy card. Everything is allowable in the name of being cheap, I guess ;)" - Linus Torvalds[10]

In addition to the ham radio community, the AllStar software has become popular in the GMRS community.[11][12]

In December 2020 a falling out occurred between the AllStarLink Board of Directors and the volunteers who then ran the AllStarLink network systems. This resulted in a very public split between both groups with the latter eventually forming the PTTLink Network based on the AllStar/AllStarLink network software.[13][14][15][16][17][18][19]

Operation

[edit]

AllStarLink is run by the non-elected Board of Directors of AllStarLink, Inc., a Florida registered not for profit corporation that is based in California.[20][21]

Daily operations of the AllStarLink network and systems are done by volunteers in the ham radio community.
