SMARTS emerged from computer research labs at the University of Sydney in 1994, and was designed to monitor real time trading activity and systematically identify market manipulation[2]. from 2003, Furche lead the SMARTS group as CEO and director until their acquisition by the NASDAQ in 2010 for a purchase price of $77 Million[2].

Furche has been a key figure in the Australian Capital Markets Cooperative Research Centre since its conception in 2003. Furche was CEO of the Australian Digital Finance Cooperative Research Centre from it's formation in 2022 until march 2024.[5]
