Augie K Fabela II (born 1966 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American businessman and entrepreneur. He is the Co-Founder and Chairman[1][2] of multinational telecommunication and digital services company VEON,[3][4] which he co-founded with scientist Dmitry Zimin. In 2025, the film "Connected" depicting their business and personal relationship was released in theaters worldwide[5]
Biography
[edit]Augie Fabela was born in 1966 in Chicago, Illinois. He received his Bachelor's degree in international relations and his Master's degree in policy studies from Stanford University, graduating in 1987.[6][7]After graduating from Stanford, Fabela spent two years in Japan, working for a media company. He then returned to the United States and established Plexsys International (a.k.a. Comsat RSI Wireless), an American mobile network equipment manufacturer[5]
In 1991, Fabela travelled to the Soviet Union as a salesman for Plexsys.[8] During his travels he met Dr. Dmitry B. Zimin and the two struck up a friendship.[9][10][11] Fabela and Zimin's friendship and business relationship is depicted in the 2025 documentary "Connected," directed by Vera Krichevskaya.
VEON (1992-present)
[edit]In 1992, soon after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Fabela and Dr. Zimin founded telecommunications company Vimpelcom[3][4]. In 1994, Fabela was named Chairman of the Board. One year after it was founded, Vimpelcom launched its first commercial telecommunications network, BEELINE[3],[12]
In November 1995, Fabela and Zimin decided to take Vimpelcom public and the company held an initial public offering (IPO), listing on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on November 15, 1996 with the valuation of $450 million.[13] Augie Fabela served as Chairman of the Board at Vimpelcom from 1994 to 2002[5] and then again from June 2011 to December 2012. He was named an Independent Director in 2022, and then resumed his role as Chairman in May 2024.[14][11]
The company was renamed VEON in 2017.[15]
As Chairman, Fabela plays a role at VEON and its subsidiaries, including working with governments, NGOs and partners to respond to national crises - including the Russian aggression in Ukraine and natural disasters such as the devastating floods in Pakistan.[16][17][18][19]

Personal Life
[edit]Augie Fabela is the son of immigrants from Mexico and Colombia. He was born and raised in the Midwest of the United States.[23][5]. Fabela has also done philanthropic work through the Fabela Family Foundation[24] and has been volunteering with the Cook County Police Department and SWAT team since 2011[5]
Augie Fabela has authored two books, "DECIDE: Tactical Crisis Decision Making: A Framework for Law Enforcement,"[25] and Amazon best seller The Impatience Economy.[26]
