Autotrader Australia (stylised simply as Autotrader) is an online automotive-classifieds marketplace based in Sydney. Launched on 30 November 2018 as the first international off-shoot of the American Autotrader brand, the site lists new, used and demonstrator vehicles from franchised dealers and private sellers and publishes consumer-facing editorial and pricing data for the Australian market.[1]

History

[edit]

Plans for an Australian version of Autotrader surfaced in 2017 after Cox Automotive’s local arm bought News Corp's stake in CarsGuide.[1] Following a multimillion-dollar marketing push, the Australian site went live in 2018, promising to "reduce risk" for car buyers through transparent pricing and visible dealer reviews.[1] Creative agency Saatchi & Saatchi introduced the brand nationally in February 2019 with the integrated “A Smarter Way to Trade Auto” campaign that spanned television, outdoor, digital and print media.[2] A second brand platform, “Feel Like a Car Person,” debuted in July 2021 and shifted the focus from listings quantity to buyer empowerment and education.[3][4]

In August 2022, The Market Herald agreed to acquire Gumtree, CarsGuide and Autotrader, a deal completed on 31 August 2022.[5]
