Badagarang is a developing suburb located in the Shoalhaven region of New South Wales, Australia. The suburb is situated approximately 11 km north-west of Nowra, a prominent town in the Shoalhaven local government area. Badagarang spans both sides of Moss Vale Road between Bomaderry and Cambewarra Village and covers 425 hectares, with plans for around 3,500 new homes to address the local housing market.[1]

History

[edit]

The name "Badagarang" honors the cultural heritage of the Dharawal people, representing the Eastern Grey Kangaroo, a traditional totem. The name was chosen in consultation with the Nowra Local Aboriginal Land Council and Council’s Aboriginal Advisory Committee.[1]

Development and Infrastructure

[edit]

The Shoalhaven City Council is actively planning the development of Badagarang to address the region's housing needs. The Moss Vale Road North Urban Release Area is designated for development, with plans for between 2,000 and 2,500 new homes, a local shopping center, parks, and supporting road infrastructure.[2] A $9 million housing project has also been unveiled on farmland at 220 Moss Vale Road, proposing 148 new homes to address housing shortages in the area.[3]

Geography

[edit]

Badagarang is located on the banks of Badagarang Creek, a tributary of the Shoalhaven River. The area features lush green landscapes, rolling hills, and large rural properties. Its natural surroundings provide a peaceful environment for residents while remaining accessible to urban services in Nowra. The suburb is planned with a mix of residential developments and green spaces, ensuring its rural charm is preserved amidst urban growth.[4]

Demographics

[edit]

As of 2023, the combined area including Bangalee, Cambewarra, Tapitalee, and Badagarang has an estimated population of 3,240, with a population density of 64.15 persons per square kilometer.[4] Many new residents are families and retirees seeking a quieter lifestyle with access to urban amenities.

Transport

[edit]

Badagarang is connected to Nowra and nearby towns via road, with the Princes Highway providing direct access to the suburb. A new road connecting Illaroo Road in Bangalee with Moss Vale Road at Bells Lane enhances connectivity for residents.[5]

Local Amenities

[edit]

Badagarang offers parks, recreational facilities, and access to the Shoalhaven River, which provides opportunities for outdoor activities such as fishing, boating, and hiking. The suburb’s development includes plans for additional amenities, including shopping centers and community facilities.[6]
