The Bohun Uprising in 1659 was a popular uprising in Right Bank Ukraine against Ivan Vyhovsky, led by Ivan Bohun and other notable Cossacks such as Ivan Sirko and Ivan Bezpaly.[1]
Background
[edit]With the signing of the Treaty of Hadiach with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth by Vyhovsky in September 1658 and the defeat of the Moscovite army at Konotop. Others naturally opposed Polish rule imposed by the Treaty of Hadiach which led them to take a more pro-Russian stance.
Uprising
[edit]In 1659, the combined forces of the Russian army of Grigory Romodanovsky and the Cossack regiments of Ivan Bohun, Ivan Bezpaly and the Zaporozhian Cossacks of Ivan Sirko defeated the army led by Vyhovsky near Lubny and Lokhvitsa . After the defeat, Vyhovsky began negotiations on accepting Ukraine into Turkish citizenship and turned to the Crimean Tatars for help . Ivan Bohun and Ivan Sirko defeated the Tatars and moved on the hetman's capital of Chigirin.
Aftermath
[edit]Vyhovsky fled to territory under Polish control, where he was shot by Polish authorities in 1664 on suspicion of collaboration with rebels during unrest in Right-Bank.
