Byron Metcalf is an educator, researcher, and guide specializing in transpersonal work, as well as a shamanic practioner, and a professional musician. He is also known as a percussionist, drummer, and recording engineer, using these for meditative practices such as shamanic journeying and breathwork.

Music career

[edit]

Metcalf has been a professional drummer since age 15, inspired by The Gene Krupa Story, and has worked on solo and collaborative projects, also playing on gold and platinum albums.[1] He played on Waylon Jennings' "Waylon at JD's" and Kenny Rogers "The Gambler (album)".[1] He has worked with Steve Roach, Mark Seelig, Dashmesh Khalsa, and many other artists. Metcalf has performed at Carnegie Hall, Kia Forum, Wembley Arena, and on The Tonight Show, The Grammy Awards, and more. Metcalf started transitioning his musical work to accompany Holotropic Breathwork (New Age) workshops and shamanic drumming ceremonies. Metcalf has released 37 albums and has collaborated with Roach on multiple occasions such as The Serpent's Lair (2000 Projekt Records) and The Shaman's Heart (2005 Dr. Bam's Music), along with Seelig on Wachuma's Wave (2203 Spotted Peccary Music) and more. Metcalf has worked with Monroe Products to release "meta-music" versions of many of his albums.

Biography

[edit]

Metcalf has a Ph.D in transpersonal psychology and a master's in counseling psychology. He has worked with Stanislav Grof and is a graduate of his Grof Transpersonal Training and Eupsychia Institute's Psycho-Spiritual Integration programs. Metcalf's "Examining the Effects of Holotropic Breathwork in the Recovery from Alcoholism and Drug Dependence" (1995) has been used in professional articles as well as presented at conferences regarding addiction. For over 10 years, he worked as a graduate advisor for the counseling psychology master's degree program at Prescott College. Metcalf has been dedicated to exploring consciousness and spiritual growth, with a particular focus on how altered states of consciousness can lead to personal transformation. Metcalf retired from professional counseling in 2006 to shift his focus towards HoloShamanic Strategies, LLC, which offers healing services such as shamanic counseling. In 2012, Metcalf created Field Effect Audio Technology, a brain entrainment technology that can shift the user's perception and interaction with reality. Metcalf was married to country music singer Dottie West from 1972 until their divorce in 1980 due to "irreconcilable differences", leading him to enter alcohol-abuse treatment.[2] Metcalf now lives in Prescott Valley, Arizona.
