Can Sakir Binan (born 7 April 1956) is a Turkish architect, conservation and restoration expert practicing in Istanbul.[1] He graduated from Galatasaray High School in 1976 and then from the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts (IDMMA) Faculty of Architecture, Department of Architecture, in 1981. With his thesis titled "A Study on the Conservation Criteria of 13th Century Anatolian Caravanserais," he earned his PhD at Istanbul Technical University in 1991, became an Associate Professor in 1996, and a Professor at Yıldız Technical University in 2010.[2]

His areas of expertise include the History of Architectural Conservation, Conservation and Restoration Technology, World Heritage, Medieval Anatolian and both classical and late period Ottoman Architecture. In addition to his books, articles, and research on Architectural Conservation and Restoration, he is a member of the ICOMOS Turkey National Committee and served as the Chair of the Istanbul 3rd Cultural and Natural Heritage Conservation Board from 2001 to 2010.

Works

Binan continues to teach in the Faculty of Architecture undergraduate program, as well as in the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences’ Restoration and Conservation Master’s and PhD programs. In addition to supervising doctoral and master’s theses, he has completed the supervision of 12 PhD and 30 master’s theses to date.

In the field of applied work, he has been involved in various restoration projects, including the restoration of Rüstem Pasha Mosque, Ramazan Efendi Mosque, Davut Pasha Mosque, Azapkapi Sokollu Mosque conducted by the General Directorate of Foundations,[3] and the preservation and restoration of Ketchaoua Mosque in Algeria,[4] Sultan Ahmed Mosque, Selimiye Mosque,[5] the Topkapi Palace Harem Apartments, Kasımpaşa Naval Hospital, and Zeytinburnu Fabrika-i Hümayun historical structures, under the supervision of TIKA. He has also provided consultancy for the restoration of Galata Merkez Han, Rıhtım Han, and Sancak Kulesi, as well as for the restoration projects of Imrahor Ilyas Bey Mosque/Monastery of Stoudios and Eski Imaret Mosque. Currently, he is part of the Scientific Committees for the restoration of Kahramanmaraş Ulu Camii, Tekke Mosque, Karakadi Mosque, Edirne Selimiye Mosque,[6] and the Hagia Sophia.[7]

Early life

Binan was born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey. He is a son of Muhittin Binan who was also an architect and academic in Istanbul Technical University, specializing in construction technology.
