Encyclopedia articles need to be written from a neutral point of view, and should refer to a range of independent, reliable, published sources, not just to materials produced by the creator of the subject being discussed. This is important so that the article can meet Wikipedia's verifiability policy and the notability of the subject can be established. If you still feel that this subject is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, please rewrite your submission to comply with these policies. CardioAscona
[edit]CardioAscona, formally known as the International Ascona Workshop on Cardiomyocyte Biology[1][2], is a biennial scientific workshop dedicated to advancing research on cardiomyocytes (heart muscle cells) and cardiac biology. Held at the historic Monte Verità in Ascona, Switzerland, the workshop fosters collaborative, in-depth discussions in a retreat-like setting, emphasizing unpublished and emerging research in cardiovascular science.
CardioAscona brings together leading researchers, clinicians, and trainees in cardiac biology to explore:
- Developmental cardiology (heart formation and growth)
- Molecular and epigenetic regulation of heart function
- Disease modeling (e.g., cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias)
- Regenerative and translational cardiology
The workshop’s intimate format encourages open exchange of preliminary data, often leading to peer-reviewed publications and long-term collaborations.
History
[edit]CardioAscona was co-founded in 1994 by Prof. Marcus C. Schaub (1936–2018) and three colleagues as the "International Workshop on Cardiomyocyte Biology".[3] The biennial workshop has been held at the Monte Verità congress center in Ascona, Switzerland, since its inception, fostering a retreat-like environment for cardiac researchers.[4]
- 8th Workshop (2015) – Focused on developmental and environmental cues in cardiac function.
- 10th Workshop (2021) – Organized with EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organization), highlighting epigenetic and epitranscriptomic regulation in heart disease.
- The 11th Workshop (2024) – Held 26–30 May 2024, sponsored by Clinical Science journal, addressed innovations in cardiac regeneration and disease mechanisms.[5]
Objectives and Format
[edit]The workshop features:
- Keynote Lectures – Delivered by field leaders.
- Oral Presentations – Selected from abstract submissions.
- Poster Sessions – Highlighting early-career research.
- Networking Events – Facilitated by the secluded, scenic environment of Monte Verità.
Unlike large conferences, CardioAscona prioritizes discussion over formal presentations, with sessions designed to challenge existing paradigms.

Marcus leaves behind two veritable 'pearls'. Together with three other colleagues, Marcus founded the 'International Workshop on Cardiomyocyte Biology'. This workshop took place for the first time in 1994 and since then every three years at Monte Verità in Ascona.
