coconutBattery (software)

[edit]

coconutBattery is a macOS utility developed by Christoph Sinai, a German software developer, for monitoring the health and status of Apple device batteries. First released in 2005, it provides real-time battery data for Macs, including charge level, full-charge capacity, design capacity, cycle count, and more. It also offers battery statistics for connected iPhones and iPads. The basic version of the app is free, while an optional one-time upgrade, coconutBattery Plus, unlocks additional features like Wi-Fi device support, detailed analytics, and notifications.

Version History

[edit]
  • v1.0 (Aug 2005) – Initial release for Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger).
  • v2.0 (Dec 2005) – Introduced a Dashboard widget, custom capacity tracking, and added a preferences menu for saving maximum capacity and providing live feedback (e.g., charger warnings). The update also made it a Universal Binary, supporting multiple languages.
  • v3.2 (Mar 2015) – Added iOS device support, allowing users to view battery statistics for connected iPhones, iPads, and iPods.
  • v4.0 (Dec 2024) – Major redesign with a new UI, app icon, real-time power usage metrics for Macs, and an enhanced Battery Lifetime analyzer. Low-battery notifications were also added for iOS devices.
  • v4.0.3 (Apr 2025) – Maintenance update to improve Wi-Fi connection with iPhones and iPads, fix display issues, add support for the 2025 MacBook Air, and introduce Chinese localization.

macOS Version

[edit]

On macOS, coconutBattery provides detailed battery health information for connected devices. The “This Mac” view displays the current charge, full-charge capacity, design capacity, cycle count, and more. A “History” tab logs readings over time, showing how a MacBook’s health declines and how its cycle count grows. The Plus upgrade unlocks a “Battery Lifetime Analyzer” that tracks temperature, voltage, and charge/discharge rates. Users can save snapshots and set up notifications for low-battery warnings.

iOS Integration

[edit]

coconutBattery also supports iOS devices, reporting their battery health when connected to a Mac. It can display charge levels, cycle counts, and battery health for iPhones and iPads. The app does not run on the iOS device itself but accesses the device’s battery data via USB or Wi-Fi connection. With the Plus upgrade, users can access battery information wirelessly if Wi-Fi syncing is enabled.

Reception

[edit]

coconutBattery has received positive reviews from the tech community, with many praising its detailed reporting and historical tracking capabilities. It has been recommended in Mac forums and is often cited as a reliable tool for monitoring battery health. Some minor discrepancies compared to macOS’s built-in readings have been noted, but coconutBattery’s granular data is typically seen as accurate for spotting battery degradation.

System Requirements and Compatibility

[edit]

coconutBattery is distributed outside the Mac App Store and is available for download from the developer’s website. The latest version (4.x) supports macOS 12 Monterey or later. Older versions of coconutBattery support previous macOS releases, such as OS X 10.11 through macOS 11 Big Sur. It is compatible with both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.

To access iOS features, users need a Mac running at least OS X 10.7 (Lion) and an iOS device running iOS 7 or later. No separate iOS app is required, as the app uses standard Apple device drivers to extract battery data from connected devices.

Licensing and Cost

[edit]

coconutBattery’s core functionality is free, with the option to support the developer via a one-time purchase of the coconutBattery Plus upgrade (approx. US$9.95). The Plus version unlocks premium features, including detailed analytics and Wi-Fi syncing. Users can try the Plus features up to 10 launches before requiring payment. Even without the Plus upgrade, the standard version remains fully functional for basic battery diagnostics.
