David Onama (born June 7, 1994) is a Ugandan mixed martial artist who competes in the Featherweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Background
[edit]Born in the Kyangwali Refugee Settlement in Uganda, David came over to the United States with his family at the age of 10. He knew he wanted to be a fighter from a young age. With his debut in 2021, he became the first Ugandan in the UFC.[2][3]
Mixed martial arts career
[edit]Early career
[edit]Making his MMA debut at KCFA 32, he defeated Fransisco Pintos via second round TKO, winning his next two bouts in the promotion, via 12 second guillotine against Raymond Bighead and second round rear-naked choke against Sam Fernandez. Debuting with FAC, he made his promotional debut at FAC 2, where he defeated Antonio Castillo via TKO in round one. Onama would go on to win his next four bouts under the FAC banner; via TKO in the first round against Sam Agushi at FAC 3, third round guillotine against Justin Overton at FAC 4, first round TKO against Mike Plazola in the main event of FAC 7, and then finally at FAC 10, he knocked out Brad Robison in round one.[4]
Ultimate Fighting Championship
[edit]Onama, replacing Alan Patrick, made his UFC debut on short notice moving up to lightweight against Mason Jones on October 23, 2021 at UFC Fight Night: Costa vs. Vettori.[5] Onama lost the fight via unanimous decision.[6]
Onama faced Gabriel Benítez on February 19, 2022 at UFC Fight Night: Walker vs. Hill. At weigh-ins, Benítez weighed in at 148 pounds, 2 pounds over the featherweight non-title fight limit. The bout proceeded at catchweight and he was fined 30% of his purse.[7] Onama won the bout via first round knockout.[8] The win earned Onama his first Performance of the Night bonus award.[9]
Onama, as a replacement Lerone Murphy, was scheduled to face Nate Landwehr on March 26, 2022 at UFC Fight Night: Blaydes vs. Daukaus.[10] In turn, Landwehr had to pull out of the bout and the bout was scrapped.[11]
Onama was scheduled to face Austin Lingo on July 9, 2022 at UFC on ESPN 39.[12] However, Lingo pulled out during fight week,[13] and was replaced by promotional newcomer Garrett Armfield.[14] Onama won the fight via a submission in round two.[15]
