Delta Chat is a decentralized and encrypted messaging app, available for mobile and desktop platforms.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10]

Delta Chat looks like WhatsApp,[10] Telegram and other messaging apps but internally it is an encrypted e-mail client.[4][5][6][10] Users can signup anonymously to a variety of interoperable chatmail servers[11] which are minimal e-mail servers optimized for fast and secure operations.[12] It is also possible to use classic e-mail servers and an existing e-mail account (such as Gmail) in which case Delta Chat acts as a normal e-mail app.[4][12][5][6][7]

Delta Chat supports direct(one-on-one) chats as well as group chats.[6] End-to-end encryption[13] with contacts and group chats is automatically established via Autocrypt[14][9][5][6][15] which in turn uses a subset of the OpenPGP standard.

Delta Chat also supports Webxdc[16] (in-chat mini-apps)[15][17][18] allowing users to play mini-games or use collaborative tools with their chat partners.[19][20] Webxdc was originally developed by Delta Chat[21] and is being adopted by other messengers, such as Cheogram[21][22] and Monocles[23]

Android version of Delta Chat originated by Bjoern Petersen[4] in 2016[24][25] as a fork of Telegram[26][27][28] and in 2019 switched to being a fork of Signal[28][27].

In 2021 Delta Chat reached over 100 000 downloads on Google Play.[29]

Reception

[edit]

The popular German media conglomerate Heise published two articles about Delta Chat, the first in 2019[30] and the second in 2023[31]

In 2019 the regional newspaper HNA published an article about Delta Chat.[32]

As of 2024, the Delta Chat project underwent four independent security audits[19] and one independent security analysis[33].[34]
