Diana Stein (also known as Diana Aishe) is a theatre director, playwright, scenographer, lyricist, and performer.[1][2] She combines directing, scenography, and writing in her projects.[3] Over the years, Stein has contributed to experimental theatre and national productions at institutions such as the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theatre,[4][5][6] the Taras Shevchenko Dnipro National Academic Ukrainian Music and Drama Theatre,[7][8][9] and the Les Kurbas National Centre for Theatre Arts.[10][11] In addition to her theatre work, Stein is developing the Duskhaus project in Germany.
Early Life and Education
[edit]Diana Stein grew up in Ukraine, where she developed her initial interest in the performing arts. During her adolescence, she spent a year studying in the United States.[12][13]
Stein earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and English Language and Literature in 2009 and a Master's in Psychology in 2010 from Oles Honchar Dnipro National University.[12][14] She also completed an acting course at the Virymo Theatre. Later, she studied theatre directing at the Kyiv National I. K. Karpenko-Kary Theatre, Cinema and Television University, receiving her Bachelor's degree in 2014 and Master's degree in 2015.[12][13]
During this period, she initiated Aparté Theatre, directing experimental productions.[12][15] She also participated in visual art projects, including organizing specialized art events and collaborating with Ukrainian artists, designers, and photographers. Her contributions included appearances in artistic projects and commercial photoshoots by Ukrainian visual artists and photographers.[12]
Career
[edit]Stein's work spans directing, playwriting, lyric composition, music production, performing, and literary translation, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach.[3][16][17][18] Her projects encompass independent experimental theatre,[2] national theatre productions[5],[19][20] and international collaborations.[1][21][22] She initiated and led Aparté Theatre, creating drama texts and adaptations of literary classics and directing over ten experimental productions, including Hello, This Is Max Speaking (adapted from Hanoch Levin), Play (Samuel Beckett), The Lover (Harold Pinter), and Experimental World (adapted from short stories by Pär Lagerkvist). Her work during this period was recognised for its experimental staging and conceptual innovation.[15][23][24]
Stein later expanded her work to national theatre, joining the ensemble at the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theatre. There, she worked as an associate director for productions such as All My Sons (Arthur Miller),[25] Alice's Travel to Switzerland (Lukas Bärfuss),[26] and Sanation (Václav Havel).[27] At the same time, she worked as a director on independent projects such as pOST bLOCK, a site-specific multimedia performance presented at the Museum of Spiritual Treasures of Ukraine, which explored themes of urban identity.[28][29]
Notably, Stein staged two versions of No Pictures Expected (adapted from Daniil Kharms' The Old Woman): the first premiered in 2013 at the Ivan Kozlovsky Art Centre of the National Operetta of Ukraine,[30] and the second in 2015 at the Les Kurbas National Centre for Theatre Arts.[10][17] Both productions received critical acclaim for their innovative interpretation of absurdist theatre.[16][20][31]
At the Taras Shevchenko Dnipro National Academic Ukrainian Music and Drama Theatre, she directed Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt's Partners in Crime (2014)[32][33][34][35] and Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler (2015).[13][36][37][38] Partners in Crime earned her the Best Debut award at the Sicheslavna Theatre Festival in 2014.[39][40] Both productions received positive reviews, with critics highlighting their compelling direction and emotional depth.[32][36]
At the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theatre, she directed a musical play Gelsomino in the Land of Liars (2016–2018), for which she wrote the stage adaptation and lyrics for original songs.[3][5][41][42][43] Stein also founded the Actor's Multilingual Performance Lab at the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theatre, a research initiative exploring the connections between linguistic adaptability and expressive depth in performance. The program served as the foundation for the development of the English-language production Farewell Cabaret (2020–2021), where Stein contributed as a director, playwright, lyricist, and performer. In this work, she integrated theatrical narrative with music, experimenting with new approaches to actor training and multilingual storytelling.[44]
Her productions, including No Pictures Expected, were showcased at cultural events such as multidisciplinary international festival GOGOLFEST, and received recognition, including a nomination for the Kyiv Pectoral Theatre Award.[31][45][46][47]
In 2022-2023, Stein also contributed to the leadership of the Tel Aviv International Theatre Festival (TAITF), shaping its artistic programming.
Currently based in Germany, Stein continues to expand her artistic portfolio. Her experiences with national theatres,[48] leading European cultural organisations[49] and collaborations with international artists have shaped her interdisciplinary practice.[44] Stein is currently developing the Duskhaus project in Germany.
Advocacy, International Collaboration, and Educational projects
[edit]Stein has been actively involved in supporting independent theatre and cultural initiatives, collaborating with organisations like the European Theatre Convention (ETC), the International Network for Contemporary Performing Arts (IETM), and the East European Performing Arts Platform (EEPAP).[1][22] She played a key role in founding Ukraine's first online theatre platform, which provided resources to independent artists and theatre institutions, and participated in discussions at the IETM Satellite Meeting in Kyiv, strengthening connections between Ukrainian and international theatre professionals.[50][51][52] Her work with the Working Group for Independent Theatres and subsequent roundtable discussions organised by the National Union of Theatre Workers of Ukraine (NUTWU) focused on addressing systemic challenges within the theatre sector.[53][54]
Internationally, Stein has partnered with institutions that support cross-cultural exchange like the Goethe-Institut and participated in IETM Plenary Meetings[55] and ETC conferences.[56][57] She was engaged with theatre production at Schauspielhaus Graz in Graz (Austria), involved on Cactus Land (based on Anthony Loyd's novel) and Benefiz (by Ingrid Lausund),[1][21][58] and at Context Theatre in Israel, where she collaborated on Yosef Bar-Yosef's The Button.[12][13]
Stein also integrated theatrical practices into the educational process, creating and leading initiatives such as Foreign Language Through Drama and drama pedagogy seminars, using theatre as a tool for learning.[59] Additionally, she taught other educational programs at Aparté Theatre Studio and served as a lecturer at JCD ETRC (Kyiv), sponsored by the U.S. Embassy.[24] At Aparté Theatre Studio, she conducted the course Contemporary Interpretations of Literary Classics, during which she led discussions and introduced new approaches to classic texts.[12]
