The disappearance of Alexandra Roschlauer was a missing person case, later treated as a suspected murder, that was primarily covered by local media in Romania and Germany. It also attracted limited attention from tabloid newspapers. [1][2][3]
Background
[edit]Roschlauer, a bank employee of Romanian descent who had acquired German citizenship, lived in Nuremberg, Germany. Her disappearance and presumed murder in December 2022 led to the arrest of her ex-partner, businessman Dejan B., on September 6, 2023.[4] B. was charged with murder [5], although Roschlauer’s body was never found—only a few strands of her hair were discovered. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on July 24, 2024. [6] B. has never spoken publicly about the case, which is currently under appeal in the German court system. He remains in custody during the appeals process. According to prosecutors, the suspected motive was financial—stemming from B’s growing economic difficulties and alleged greed. Roschlauer had moved from her native Romania to Germany in 2003 to marry and secure residency. After divorcing in 2007—following Romania’s accession to the EU—she entered into a relationship with B. The couple became involved in real estate, purchasing run-down properties that B. would renovate through his companies. However, the financial arrangements, company structures, and respective ownership roles involving Roschlauer, B., and others were never fully clarified in court or by the media. [7] At the time of her disappearance, Roschlauer was eight months pregnant. CCTV footage captured her dropping off her foster child at kindergarten. [8]Later, a car—borrowed by B. and driven by his business partner, Ugur T.—was seen in her neighborhood. T. was later also found guilty. Roschlauer’s body was never recovered, and no blood evidence was found. The prosecution relied on forensic evidence, including several hairs discovered both in a house owned by Roschlauer and in a broom found at a warehouse rented by B.[9]This warehouse was used to store construction materials for various properties, including Roschlauer’s home. The court concluded that Roschlauer had been abducted and murdered at the warehouse. Afterwards, T. allegedly transported her mobile phone to South Tyrol, Italy—approximately 400 kilometers and a four-and-a-half-hour drive from Nuremberg—in an attempt to create a false trail. The phone was ultimately placed a Polish truck en route to Rome and discovered by the driver when ringing. [10] However, doubts about her death prevail, and it is widely believed that she was involved in illegal transactions involving dirty money, which could be why she possibly fled from Germany, placing false traces to Italy.[11]
Interestingly, despite his claims of being unable to speak Romanian and both him and Alexandra expressing a dislike for Romania, Dr. Bastian R., Alexandra’s partner, was appointed as an Honorary Professor at the Petre Andrei University in Iași, Romania, shortly after her disappearance.[12]
Internet coverage
[edit]Despite the entire trial being based solely on circumstantial evidence, the guilt of the accused was rarely questioned by mainstream media. However, there has been ongoing debate in online True Crime forums HET Forum[13] and Allmystery. [14]
Internet users have pointed out that Roschlauer’s monthly loan obligations likely far exceeded her salary, pushing her into significant debt. They speculate that she may have fled abroad—possibly to Romania, Moldova, or Ukraine—to escape prosecution for financial irregularities, suspicion of money laundering [15] and false accusations against her former business partners, and to start a new life.
