Edgardo Defortuna is an Argentine-American real estate developer and businessman. He is the president, chief executive officer, and founder of Fortune International Group, a real estate development firm based in Miami, Florida. [1][2] Defortuna is fluent in English and Spanish.

Early life and education

[edit]

Defortuna was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in electrical and mechanical engineering.[3] In 1983, he moved to the United States and later obtained a master’s degree in business from the University of Miami.[4]

Career

[edit]

After relocating to Miami in 1983, Defortuna began managing residential properties for absentee owners and acquired a residential real estate brokerage in the Brickell neighborhood.[3] He initially focused on selling units within the Brickell Place complex and established his first office, which would later become Fortune International Group. [5][6]

During the early 1990s, high inflation in Argentina prompted increased interest in overseas property investment among Argentine buyers.[7] Defortuna provided property management services to South American clients, including those from Argentina, who were interested in investing in South Florida real estate.[8][9][10] He worked with legal and financial professionals to facilitate the purchasing process and established relationships with brokers in Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia. By the early 2000s, Argentina was among the leading countries whose citizens were purchasing residential properties in Miami.[11]

In 1998, Defortuna and his wife, Ana Cristina Defortuna, launched the residential development division of Fortune International Group, with projects in areas such as Brickell, Key Biscayne, Coral Gables, Miami Beach, Aventura, and Sunny Isles Beach.[8][12] One of the company’s first ground-up developments was Jade Residences at Brickell Bay.[1]

Defortuna was among the early developers of luxury high-rise buildings in Sunny Isles Beach. [12][13] Notable projects include Jade Beach (2008), Jade Ocean (2009), and Jade Signature (2018), the latter developed in collaboration with the architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron and interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon.

Community involvement

[edit]

Defortuna serves on the advisory board of the University of Miami Business School[14] and is a member of the board of trustees at Ransom Everglades School.[15] He is also a board member of the Argentine-U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Miami[16] and the Mayor's International Council.

Personal life

[edit]

Defortuna is married to Ana Cristina Defortuna and has five children. In 2013, he was added to the Haute Miami 100 List of Most Powerful People.[17]
