Draft:Flemish Institute for Technological Research

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Flemish Institute for Technological Research, better known as VITO, is an independent Flemish research organization based in Mol.

The research activities focus on three domains: a regenerative economy, a healthy living environment, and resilient ecosystems. To achieve this, employees collaborate in multidisciplinary teams across more than 40 research fields.[1]

Organisation

[edit]

VITO operates partly with its own resources (contract research, patents) and partly with subsidies from the Flemish government, which is why government commissioners from the WEWIS department are also part of the Board of Directors.

Dirk Fransaer served as Managing Director from 2001 to 2023. Inge Neven[2] is now the CEO.[3][4] The executive committee also includes:

  • Peter Vercaemst (adjunct-CEO)
  • Walter Eevers (R&D and Valorisation)
  • Bert Bouwman (Materials & Chemistry)
  • Leen Govaerts (Water & Energy Transition)
  • Rudi Torfs (Environmental Intelligence)
  • Carmen Six (Finance & Operations)

In addition to its headquarters in Mol, VITO has offices in Berchem, Genk, Ostend, Ghent, and Kortrijk. Its international branches are located in Qatar, Beijing, and Dubai. VITO operates in 40 countries and employs approximately 1,300 staff members.

Partnerships

[edit]
  • VITO collaborates with governments, organizations, and businesses, both in Flanders and internationally.
  • EnergyVille is a partnership between the Belgian research institutions KU Leuven, VITO, imec, and UHasselt, focused on research into sustainable energy and smart energy systems. It employs hundreds of researchers and has a major facility at Thor Park.
