Fragile Oasis is a non-profit initiative founded by NASA astronaut Ron Garan in 2010, aimed at fostering collaboration among humanitarian organizations to address global challenges. Inspired by the view of Earth from space, the project seeks to unite people in solving issues such as poverty, environmental degradation, and social inequality, emphasizing the interconnectedness of humanity on what astronauts call our "fragile oasis."

History

[edit]

Fragile Oasis was launched following Ron Garan's experiences aboard the International Space Station (ISS) during Expedition 27/28 in 2011. From orbit, Garan captured thousands of photographs and time-lapse videos of Earth, which highlighted the planet's beauty and fragility. These visuals, combined with his interactions with fellow crewmembers like Alexander Samokutyaev, who remarked, “I wish all could fly to space and maybe they’ll realize how fragile life is on earth,” inspired the initiative's mission to promote global cooperation.

In September 2011, Fragile Oasis partnered with the Random Hacks of Kindness (RHoK) community to launch "The Collaboration Project," a technology challenge to develop tools for unifying humanitarian efforts. The initiative encouraged organizations to work together on projects addressing critical global issues, starting with Fragile Oasis’s own goals but expandable to broader applications.

Mission and Goals

[edit]

The core mission of Fragile Oasis is to inspire action by sharing the "orbital perspective"—the view of Earth as a single, interconnected system. Its goals include:

  • Facilitating collaboration among non-profits, governments, and individuals to tackle global problems.
  • Raising awareness about environmental and social challenges through imagery and stories from space.
  • Encouraging public participation in humanitarian projects, positioning people as “crew members” rather than spectators.

The initiative uses media, such as time-lapse videos set to music by artists like Peter Gabriel, to convey its message. These efforts aim to make the astronaut experience accessible and motivate collective action.

Key Projects

[edit]

The Collaboration Project

[edit]

Launched with RHoK in 2011, this project focuses on creating open-source tools to enhance coordination among humanitarian organizations. It began with a challenge to develop platforms for sharing resources and data, with potential applications for disaster response and poverty alleviation.

Earth Photography and Videography

[edit]

Fragile Oasis shares high-resolution images and videos taken by astronauts, such as those by Ron Garan using a Nikon D3s camera with manual settings (e.g., ISO 10000, shutter speeds of 1 second or longer). These visuals, often accompanied by music, aim to evoke a sense of unity and urgency for protecting Earth.

Impact

[edit]

Fragile Oasis has influenced public discourse by promoting the orbital perspective, encouraging viewers to see Earth without borders. Its collaboration with RHoK has spurred innovation in humanitarian technology, though specific outcomes of The Collaboration Project are still evolving. The initiative continues to engage audiences through social media and NASA’s outreach efforts, inspiring individuals to contribute to global solutions.
