GE Asset Intelligence, LLC, was a business unit of General Electric (GE) that focused on providing trailer and container tracking solutions for manufacturers, retailers, shippers, and freight transportation providers. I.D. Systems acquired the business in January, 2010.[1]
History
[edit]GE Asset Intelligence was formed in 2003 under the GE Equipment Services division to provide telematics services for the transportation industry based on the VeriWise asset tracking system. The VeriWise system included a fully protected transceiver, a discreet antenna, and a patented power management system utilizing the Orbcomm low earth orbit satellite network.[2]
Initially the tracking system was only available on over the road dry van semi trailers leased from TIP Trailer Services.[3] Subsequent offerings supported refrigerated trailers, railcars and intermodal shipping containers[4][5][6] Additional enhancements included cargo sensors, a solar trickle charging system, a virtual odometer, and RFID tracking of assets down to the pallet or item level.[7][8][9]
In 2004 GE Asset Intelligence and Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) signed an agreement to develop an integrated system to protect shipping containers that tracked and reported intrusion attempts through any of the six sides of the container.[10] In 2006 Wal-Mart chose the GE VeriWise Asset Intelligence trailer-tracking technology for its fleet of 46,000 over-the-road trailers.[11] In 2007, the company added cellular-based tracking services to its technology portfolio by acquiring Terion Inc.[12] In 2009, GE Asset Intelligence reached a five-year agreement with BASF to provide GPS-based monitoring of a segment of its railcar fleet.[13]
In 2010 GE exited the telematics business through a sale of GE Asset Intelligence, LLC to I.D. Systems. Asset Intelligence would remain the preferred supplier for trailer-tracking technology for Trailer Fleet Services, GE’s trailer-leasing business.[14]
