Gourav Vallabh is an Indian academic, economist, and politician affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was previously a national spokesperson for the Indian National Congress and is known for his televised economic debates and political commentary. In 2024, he was appointed as a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council.[1][2][3][4][5]
Early life and education
[edit]Vallabh was born in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, and has academic ties to both Rajasthan and Jharkhand due to his professional tenure in Ranchi.[6] He holds a PhD in finance and has taught accountancy and economics at management institutes including Xavier Institute of Social Service (XISS), Ranchi.[7]
Academic career
[edit]Before entering politics, Vallabh was a professor and finance expert. He became widely known through televised debates on economic policy, especially on topics like GST and national budgeting.[8]
Political career
[edit]Vallabh became a spokesperson for the Indian National Congress, frequently appearing on national television. In 2023, he contested the Rajasthan Assembly elections from Udaipur but lost.[9][10]
In April 2024, Vallabh resigned from the Congress Party, stating ideological differences over what he termed “anti-Sanatan” slogans and criticism of economic contributors.[11][12][13][14]
Hours later, he joined the BJP and was formally inducted by senior party leaders.[15][16]
Appointment to PMEAC
[edit]In May 2024, Vallabh was appointed as a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, alongside academics and economists from Delhi University and the Delhi School of Economics.[2][17]
Public image
[edit]Vallabh became a popular face during TV debates, particularly after a viral exchange with a BJP spokesperson regarding the number of zeros in a trillion.[18]
