Greg Naterer
Greg Naterer is a mechanical engineer and academic administrator, currently serving as the Vice-President, Academic and Research at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), where he is also a professor in the Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering [1]. He is recognized for his leadership in higher education and significant contributions to mechanical engineering, particularly in energy systems, heat transfer, and thermodynamics.
Early Life and Education
Naterer was born in Toronto and spent his early life in Oshawa, Ontario. He earned his Bachelor of Mathematics (BMath) in Applied Mathematics in 1989, Master of Applied Science (MASc) in 1991, and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Mechanical Engineering in 1995, all from the University of Waterloo.
Career
Prior to his appointment at UPEI, Naterer was the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland from 2012 to 2022, leading substantial growth in faculty, student enrollment, and research capacity [2]. Under Naterer's leadership, Newfoundland and Labrador had the highest percentage of women undergraduate engineering students in Canada for four years in a row (27%) [3].
Naterer co-founded the Memorial Centre for Entrepreneurship (MCE) at Memorial University, together with the Faculty of Business Administration, in 2015 [4]. MCE was named one of the top five emerging entrepreneurship centers in the world by the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers [5]. Naterer was also instrumental in launching a student entrepreneurship centre at UPEI in 2024, called the Catherine Callbeck Centre for Entrepreneurship [6].
Prior to Memorial University, Naterer served as Associate Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Ontario Tech University and Tier I Canada Research Chair in Advanced Energy Systems.
Nationally and internationally, Naterer has held prominent leadership roles in education and research, including as Chair of Engineering Deans Canada (formerly National Council of Deans of Engineering and Applied Science). Since 2014, Naterer has served as the Editor-in-Chief of the AIAA Journal of Thermophysics and Heat Transfer [7, 8].
Research
Naterer’s research focuses on in energy systems, heat transfer, and thermodynamics, including over 330 journal papers, six patents, and three books in these fields [9]. His books include Advanced Heat Transfer, 3rd Edition [10], Hydrogen Production from Nuclear Energy [11], and Entropy–Based Analysis and Design of Fluids Engineering Systems [12].
Since 2020, Dr. Naterer has been named in Stanford University’s Elsevier Top 2% of Scientists in the World [13]. Naterer’s research contributions include highly cited articles and book chapters leading to an h-index of over 66 [9].
He is recognized internationally for leading a consortium of university and industry partners in four countries that developed the world’s first large-scale unit operations of a copper-chlorine cycle of thermochemical water splitting for hydrogen production, which is considered a major advance in clean energy technology [14].
Awards and Honors
Naterer has received several awards for his contributions to engineering and education, including: the K.Y. Lo Medal of the Engineering Institute of Canada [15]; Jules Stachiewicz Medal of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering [16]; Julian C. Smith Medal of the Engineering Institute of Canada [17]; Thermophysics Award of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics [18]; and Best Professor Teaching Award from the Engineering Student Society.
He is a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering (CSME) [19], American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) [20], Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) [21], Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) [22], and American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) [23].
Literary Contributions
Naterer’s book entitled Called by Mother Earth [24], by Breakwater Books, is an intimate memoir that recounts the personal journey of a ten-month search through the rugged and remote terrain of British Columbia for his missing son, Jordan Naterer, who disappeared during a hike in Manning Park. The book explores themes of love, determination, and our profound connection with the natural world, including the spiritual presence of Mother Earth, referred to as Tmxwulaxw. The book was awarded the Gold Medal, Canada–West Best Regional Non–Fiction Book [25], from the Independent Publisher Book Awards in 2025.
