HMC Architects is an architecture firm founded in 1940 and headquartered in Ontario, California. The firm operates multiple offices throughout California and the Pacific Northwest. HMC focuses on healthcare, education, and civic architecture and has been recognized in national industry rankings and awards.

History

HMC Architects was founded by Jay Dewey Harnish in 1940 in Ontario, California, initially specializing in healthcare and institutional projects in Southern California.[1] In the 1960s, additional partners joined and the firm became Harnish Morgan Causey before adopting the HMC Architects name after Harnish retired in 1978.[1]

In 2015, HMC transitioned to 100% employee ownership through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).[2]

In April 2025, HMC acquired Seattle-based Bassetti Architects, a 78-year-old firm known for its work in educational and civic design.[3]

Recognition and Rankings

In 2023, ENR California named HMC Architects its Design Firm of the Year.[2] HMC has ranked nationally at #193 on ENR’s 2025 Top 500 Design Firms list[4] and #14 in ENR California’s Top Design Firms.[5] The firm also ranked #50 on ENR’s Top 100 Green Design Firms list.[6]

In 2024, Building Design+Construction ranked HMC #13 in its Giants 400 list of U.S. architecture firms, with specialty rankings of #7 in K-12 education, #15 in healthcare, and #3 in student housing.[7]

Fast Company included HMC Architects in its 2024 World's Most Innovative Companies list, ranking #10 in the architecture category.[8]

Modern Healthcare ranked HMC #15 in its 2025 Construction & Design survey based on healthcare construction volume.[9]

Metropolis Magazine featured HMC's work related to sustainability and its participation in climate-focused design workshops.[10]

In 2025, the Chaffey Community Museum of Art hosted an exhibition titled Designing Our Community: HMC Architects in the Pomona Valley, commemorating HMC’s 85-year history.[11]

Notable projects include:

  • Harbor-UCLA Medical Center Replacement Program, a $1.7 billion healthcare facility in Los Angeles County.[12]
  • UC San Diego Ridge Walk North Living & Learning Neighborhood, a 950,000-square-foot, $537 million student housing and academic project.[7]
  • Ontario Convention Center Expansion Campus, a 450,000-square-foot convention center expansion scheduled for completion in 2027.[3]
