Hossain Mohammad Salim (Bengali: হোসাইন মোহাম্মদ সেলিম; born 28 November 1972)[1] is a Bangladeshi religious reformer and the current leader (Emam) of Hezbut Tawheed, a non-political Islamic reformist movement in Bangladesh. He assumed leadership following the death of the organization's founder, Muhammad Bayazeed Khan Panni, in 2012.[2]
Early life and education
[edit]Salim was born on 28 November 1972 in Porkara village, Sonaimuri Upazila, Noakhali District, Bangladesh. His father, Nurul Haque, served as a local administrative member for over two decades, and his mother, Hosne Ara Begum, was known for her piety.[3]
He began his education at the local maktab, learning Quranic studies and basic Islamic teachings. He completed his primary education at Porkara Government Primary School, followed by secondary education at Ahmad Ullah High School, where he passed his SSC in 1989. He then attended Laksam Nawab Faizunnesa Government College for his HSC. Salim earned his Bachelor of Social Science degree from National University in 1994 and later obtained a Master's degree in Political Science from Jagannath University.[4]
Search for truth
[edit]During his student years, Salim became deeply concerned about the global plight of Muslims, particularly influenced by reports in newspapers such as the Daily Ittefaq and the Daily Inqilab. He sought answers by engaging with various religious organizations and scholars but found their explanations unsatisfactory. His quest led him to extensive studies in libraries, including the Islamic Foundation Library and the Dhaka University Library, where he delved into Islamic jurisprudence, history, and theology.[5]
Involvement with Hezbut Tawheed
[edit]In 1998, Salim attended a conference of Hezbut Tawheed in Korotia, Tangail, where he met the founder, Muhammad Bayazeed Khan Panni. Impressed by Panni's interpretation of Islam and his emphasis on the sovereignty of Allah (Tawheed), Salim joined the movement on 28 February 1998. He became an active member, dedicating himself to the organization's mission of combating extremism, religious exploitation, and communalism.[6]
Leadership
[edit]After the death of Muhammad Bayazeed Khan Panni on 16 January 2012, Salim assumed the leadership of Hezbut Tawheed.[7] Under his guidance, the organization expanded its activities across Bangladesh, organizing seminars, street meetings, and exhibitions to promote unity and the true essence of Islam. Despite facing opposition and violent attacks, including a significant assault on 14 March 2016 that resulted in the death of two members, Salim continued his efforts to spread the message of Tawheed.[8]
Works
[edit]Salim has authored several books addressing issues like religious extremism and the misinterpretation of Islam. Notable works include:
- Dhormo Bebshar Fade
- Islam Keno Abedon Haracche
- Jongibad Songkot: Uttaraner Ekmatro Poth[9]
